I've never seen a warranty repair get reported to Carfax. Does that typically happen?

I was told that if it wasn't covered under the powertrain warranty, it would have been close to $15k
.... at least that's what I was told over the phone.

You can find a 40k mile trans for a quarter of that for sale, and then labor on top wouldnt be anywhere close.
Depending on the outcome, then its time to consult a transmission shop

Yep, in the used market $15k would likely get you a low mileage engine, transmission, all the electronics, interior including seats and dash, wheels and tires, and the previous owner's golf clubs including his shoes from the trunk...

Which is one of several reasons why Lexus techs have questionable expertise in working with the inner workings of the transmission... they rarely get to do it. Case in point here, they are simply replacing a transmission (ie. remove and replace), which is far from repairing the actual transmission.

Taking it to dealer is a good move. Drivetrain is still under warranty, but to be safe, make it clear to service writer that you would like to be notified if you're responsible for repair costs. I do hope that it's all good news. Please keep us informed for future reference and our forum search engine.

And they wonder why people don't trust dealers!

I think he was being facetious about it costing $8,000 to remove and install a transmission.
I'm guessing the service book calls for around 5-6 hours of labor, with 9 hours being the upper limit. So, if I am correct, at [say] $125/hr for labor it would cost ~$750 - $1,200 in labor to swap out an automatic transmission. (I bet some technicians can swap it out in less than 3 hours!) Also, a lot has to do with whether things like the starter and extra underbody frame cross members, etc. need to be removed or are overly difficult to remove/install.
A single shift solenoid (if the trouble code indicates a shift solenoid is actually the problem) is about ~$250. An honest transmission shop would probably charge an individual around ~$750 - $1,000 to make the repair in which they would make a quick and sizable profit.
As for the OP's transmission, whatever transmission shop furnishes a transmission for the OP's car will probably receive the OP's transmission as a core for a very minimal cost and will make the in-house repair for ~$350 and store it on a rack - and sell it back to a Lexus dealership (or out-of-warranty customer) when the next customer needs a transmission replacement. And so it goes... There's a chance that Lexus may want the OP's transmission for evaluation purposes.
