Shelter in place...home car wash question
Hey all,
Hope everyone is staying healthy during these unprecedented times. I haven't been out the house unless I need to go to the grocery stores or do a little backyard work. I know during the shelter in place only essential activities are allowed. My question or do anyone know if we can wash our cars in our driveway during these times? I haven't seen anyone wash their cars for the past month as well as myself. I don't want to look like a douche bag and ignore guidelines but I also don't want my car collecting pollen and dust either. Anyone wash their cars yet? Thanks!

I washed my car in mid April after not washing it for over a month as it sat in my driveway.
Around my area, there is a company called Majestic Mobil Car Wash - these guys come and wash my neighbor's car which is parked on the street every few weeks. The guys have masks and gloves with power washers and a huge tank of water and other supplies in a GMC Cargo van.
Bottom line: You can definitely wash your car.

I clean my car at my Apartment complex with this.
Optimum No Rinse Wash and Shine
I also use a Solo hand sprayer
and of course clean microfiber towels.
I use double the recommended Optimum(doesn't take much 2 caps worth per solo fill up), and two full solo's(.5 gallons of filtered water from fridge) to wash my entire car and rims. You spay down the panel and wipe off with the microfiber. Two large clean microfibers are enough to do the whole car+rims. It drys streak fee, no water spots, also excellent glass cleaner, and leaves everything shiny. Also doesn't hurt the paint if you spray a liberal amount on the panel. This stuff has lots of lubrication.

Thanks for the reply everyone. I asked because I was doing some research online and read some articles saying that washing your car is not an essential activity and the only thing we should be doing is disinfecting the interior such as things we touch most in our vehicles like our steering wheel, door handles and things of that nature.

In my County, we can now engage in most low-risk outdoor activities that do not require congregating in groups. There are exceptions however.
It’s all going to be how you interpret your read of the law, but I doubt anyone is going to give you a hard time for washing your car. If you are washing your car in your own driveway, technically you have not left your place of shelter so you are still sheltering in place. The only caveat I would say is for you to wear a mask because people can be walking by your house, this temporarily reducing your 6 foot buffer.
So go ahead and wash away. Our cars deserve it since most of us have not been able to drive our machines like they were meant to be driven!

Its not being paranoid. Some of us have actually lost or know of people who past from Covid-19. I don’t really care if I catch it, I am young and healthy for the most part. But if I get infected, I sure do not want to spread it to other innocent people who may not be young and spry as I am. We are all in this together. What we do as an individual may have an effect on others. It’s not just about ourself.
