My 2015 Lexus GS350 AWD is rated to only get 19 MPG city and 26 MPG highway. I just put 13.828 gallons (premium of course) in my tank after 458 miles of 95% rural highways going 45-55 mph. I used the exact same station and pump to fill the tank. That works out to 33.1 MPG which is astonishingly good! There was a small amount of rain, sparse winds, and 60° F weather. No AC use at all. Less than 100 lbs cargo and I weigh 150. I stopped a total of 4 times along the way, averaging 30 minutes per break. I was even stuck in traffic going 5 mph for an hour and 20 minutes. I would have never guessed this car was capable of getting such awesome gas mileage, granted, the conditions were pretty favorable (except for the traffic). Normally I only get 20 or so MPG in a mix of city and highway driving. That just goes to show how great these cars are on the open road!

That is really remarkable. My IS 300 AWD never got anything over about 27 MPG on a long highway drive... according to the car. I wonder if the car is overly conservative. What's the infotainment system say you got?

"After refueling" MPG readout said I was only getting 30.8, so it was conservative. The driving range was also very conservative. It said 338 miles to empty at fill-up, but I went 458 miles with just under a quarter tank to spare.
as long as you drive moderately and don't waste the accelerations these cars will do very well on fuel consumption, my LS is only rated at 25 mpg highway but will easily do 35 if you're just cruising along at 50-55, to get it down to 25 you'd have to be going like well over 80 mph so idk how they arrived at that 25 figure
in contrast the E55 will only hit its advertised 21 mpg highway if you drive very delicately on largely flat ground
Regardless of EPA estimates, getting 30+ MPG on the highway with larger non-hybrid V6s is not difficult at all, particularly in mild weather, level road surfaces, a lightly-loaded vehicle, moderate cruising-specs, and the A/C compressor off (keep in mind the compressor often runs when you are in the windshield-defrost-mode). Today's multi-speed overdrive transmissions, precise fuel-metering, and cylinder-deactivation, under those conditions, can give you astonishing highway MPG figures, as with my Buick Lacrosse and its 3.6L V6 / 9-speed automatic.

if it means anything i did once put my trip computer against the actual pump gallons used and it was within 0.1 mpg

Seems worth it, in context.
In the GTI I've been averaging about 27 with mixed driving (only occasional highway, some spirited driving). Doesn't sound amazing, but it's way better than the 19 I was getting on average in the IS 300 AWD.

Lexus 3.5 V6 is very thirsty idling and very thirsty around town, but it is extremely economical on the highway.
Do lots of highway driving, and the 3.5 V6 will give remarkable economy.
