Default BSM not working properly (after fuel pump recall repair)

My dad finally took his 2014 GS for a fuel pump recall. Might be a total coincidence but his BSM now does not work right anymore and he noticed it as soon as he got the car back from the dealer. Specifically, it lights up when the car overtaking him is within a foot or two of his rear bumper, possibly even if they are going much faster than he is. The problem seems to be more pronounced on the driver's side. So, the most common use when merging onto freeway is now rendered useless.

I drove his car and he's correct. I myself used to have 2014 and 2016 GS's and seem to remember the BSM lighting up much sooner that 0 to 2 feet away. Should be about 9-10 feet (3 meters) of range from what I recall and what I am seeing online.

Interestingly enough, it seems to be working more accurately when he overtakes another slower moving car. In other words, it works better when passing as opposed to being passed.

Spoke to two different service advisors and they both said exact same thing - the fuel pump repair should not have had any effect on BSM. They also both stated that there is no adjustment possible for the BSM which I do not think is correct as I am seeing calibration instructions online. Any thoughts or similar experiences? Obviously, 2014 is out of warranty.

The replacement of the fuel pump should have required removal of the backseat to access the pump and not effect the blind spot sensors.

Anything is possible though which is why so many people have hesitations trusting the dealership...even with recalls! The only thing I can think of is that something happened to the BSM sensors during that process but its almost impossible to prove (i believe those sensors are behind the rear bumper on either side...see this great thread on the 3IS forum: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/is-...-location.html).

Is there any damage, scuffs or anything odd about the rear bumper after you got the car back? If the bumper was hit or "bumped" at the dealership, it could certainly impact the functioning/calibration of the sensor.

No, no visible damages.

Is there a "calibration" process for the sensors to work? I'm sure the dealer disconnected the battery. Did you notice any settings that are lost after the repair?

Apparently, there IS a diagnostic and calibration process that can take 4-5 hours. I also found this info on another thread here and had confirmed by a Service Mgr at another not local to me dealer who I know to be very knowledgeable (ex shop foreman, really good at diagnostics). The problem is that it's $800 to $1,000 for diagnostics and calibration only at $200/hr which may or may not help. He did confirm that a bump could have caused some issues we are experiencing.

Now, two SA's at the local store that did fuel pump recall were adamant that there's no adjustment possible. Was told the same by an Asst Service Mgr at another dealer... Ughhh!

As far as battery disconnect: my dad is not sure as he does not use the radio. He did not have to reset the clock but he is not sure if it's exact (meaning it could have been disconnected for a few minutes). There's also a small chance that they reset time at the dealer.

Had another diagnostics specialist suggest the same calibration/diagnostics process, also with no promises. Any techs or SAs here with any ideas or suggestions?

There are no codes yet, at least none visible on the display, so it is probably useless at this point. Would not even think about doing the calibration part as it takes half a day.

I just had my recall fixed this past week. When I got back in, my BSM button was turned OFF. No idea why as I always leave it on.
Also, I was not happy to find grease marks on a few parts of my car interior from the mechanic's hands.

Yes, it still works. I have not tested the distance of it to see if that was affected. Still, why was it turned off by the dealer?

I did have my oil changed and an alignment while there, but no reason to turn off the BSM in any case. Just strange.

Bump... any chance to get any factory trained techs or service advisors to opine?

It's determined by your VIN. Just call your local dealer to confirm.
