Default Lexus gs450h 2013 engine oil type

Hello everyone,

I have bought the 2013 Lexus GS450h about a year ago. It had 220 000 km and regular service history(authorized service center). Now, it has 230 000km. After 10 000 km, I went to the authorized service to do the maintenance (change of the oils and filters). When I looked at what they did, I noticed that they used 5w30 oil, then I checked the complete service history and it says that they have always used 5w30 (for the past 7 years (from the beginning)). After this, I did research and found out that the only oil that is recommended is 0w20. And nothing else should be used.

I am not sure what should I do. Should I go back and change the oil using the 0w20 oil type? But the car has been using the wrong oil type for the past 7 years maybe it is used to it now. Should I take any legal action against the authorized service?

Thank you for your help!

I would not worry about it, not a big difference between 0w-20 and 5w-20. The engine is not that different from the last generation, you might get better mpg with ow-20, but you cars been running find last 7 years on 5w-20.

Thank you for your reply! They used the 5w30, not 5w20.

Put in some Castrol 0W-20 Extended life, $25 from Walmart and it makes the engine run much smoother, especially from cold.

Since the car has been driving fine the last 7 years on this oil, I would just leave it alone, and change it to 0w-20 on the next oil change. Doesn't hurt to call the service department and ask why they used 5w-30.

Its fine. 30 weight is certified to run in that engine. But I always use 0w-20 on mine.

Most wear happens during cold start - so 0w is better if you're in colder climates as you get the oil to the spinny bits sooner.

The new Toyota's use 0w16 !!

To those with this car (13+ 450h), how has the overall reliability of this car been? At what mileage does the battery need to be replaced.

107k miles no issues other than replacing the sunroof seal(know wind noise issue).

I replaced the original 12v battery in the trunk last year. The original hybrid battery still gave me 35.5 mpg Highway on a recent 5 hour trip.

Check out the 4GS (2013+) hybrid subforum: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/hybrid-technology-242/

You'll find all of your answers related to hybrid + more information than you probably ever knew about the car.

Enjoy,
