What makes the GS 10,000$ more expensive than the IS?

I've owned both. It looks like you are in NY - if that's the case i would give more weight to the GS, as it handles the winter weather much better. If snow is not an issue and you're 20 - buy the IS350. Sell it in 4-5 years and find a GS when you're ready for something bigger yet sporty.

In case this wasn't mentioned, one major difference between the IS and the GS is that the latter's rear seats do not fold down. This could potentially change your decision, if you need folding rear seats at all. I find them very useful to transport long items (most recently a piano stand), or even a mountain bike if necessary.
Otherwise, the GS is more luxurious, has more room inside and has more features.

The biggest difference as many others have mentioned is size. The ES is also a big car for around the same price as the IS. The ES is front wheel drive and will feel different when driving it. The GS is much more refinement in the quality of materials and feel and standard options in comparison to both the ES and IS. Considering these are all models from Lexus it's more or less you get what you pay for. You pay more you get more (assuming other factors the same l like year and mileage etc.). It is basically like the BMW 3 series or 5 series or the Audi A4 or the A6. When going from a GS to a IS you do feel like the IS is sportier. It is just a smaller car.

This thread is fun. The IS is definitely a hoot, especially in 350 trim, but at the end of the day, it’s a fling if you’re tall. My poor back couldn’t tolerate the seats in the IS, and whatever poor soul forced to sit behind me shared in the misery.
The GS is a good blend of performance and luxury, and enough size to carry 4 fully formed adults.

Ahhh the ES. I originally wanted an XSE camry, then an Avalon, ES, now I'm at GS and I hate the idea of having something lesser than that. Ego is big for people my age. Was even thinking about getting a used M5 but I came to my senses. Reliability and comfort is king. And the GS is a boss car as far as I'm concerned.

Speaking from experience, as i currently own both (is350 fsport & gs350 fsport). The IS is smaller and more sportier. the GS is more of a larger luxury cruiser. after driving the gs for a while now, the IS feels more cramped. End of the day, the GS is the IS's physically bigger brother. It also feels more upmarket, not to say the IS feels cheap, but the GS feels better
