Default Used Oil Mistake

Hi all,

I changed my oil on my 2016 GS200t this past weekend. Since its impossible to fill up the cartridge filter with oil before the first start-up, I usually drive the car for a few minutes, then after it cools, add a bit to get the dipstick on the mark to account for the oil filter capacity.

I was extremely distracted while adding that last bit and I accidentally poured some of the the drained used oil (about an 1/8 of a quart) into the crankcase. I had it set in the same spot in the same container as the new oil, a stupid mistake. The oil was changed well before the 10,000 mile interval but it was getting to be a year old and I wanted a fresh batch and filter.

Would you change the oil again after that mix-up, both the oil and filter, or do nothing with that small amount? I have both the new filter and cartridge on hand since my NX has the same engine, I bought in bulk.

Thanks!

I would not worry about an eighth of a quart. No big deal.

You're totally fine. I wouldn't worry one bit at all about that. Even if you poured an entire quart of your old oil back in I wouldn't worry. I'd probably just change it a little earlier. I usually go around 7-9K on Mobil 1 EP. Even if it was an entire quart at least 80% of the oil will be new oil.

Thanks for the advice! I'll likely change it a bit earlier.

Wouldn’t worry about it. Change it again when you have time for peace of mind.

Agree with all of the above - If I did my math right, based on the 200t capacity I was able to find online (4.9L / 5.2Q), an 1/8 of a quart would be 2.4% of the total oil volume. I wouldn't be surprised if there was still that much oil sitting around in the rest of the system.

No need to change the oil early. What you added will make no difference, it’s negligible. There is definitely at least that amount already in the system(coated engine parts, bottom of pan) when you drain it. It all get diluted when you add new oil.

Thanks for all of the responses! I did a test to see how much I possibly could have poured in and it's more like a 1/4 of a quart, it pours out fast from those 5 quart containers! Either way, it sounds like it should still be ok.

An oil change is not a complete fluid flush and fill. There is still at least a pint of old oil left in the heads, timing chains and clinging to the inside of the engine. A 1/8 of a quart is only 4 ounces so you didn't hurt it. The main idea with an oil change is to get a new filter on it and to replace the used up additive packages in the oil with fresh additives.

Yup, I always see it still dripping out a bit as I tighten up the bolt, even after a half hour or so. I was curious on the responses considering the longer change interval on these engines. I am used to about a 5K oil change and this is my first set of 10k interval cars, although both were changed at a year instead of mileage due to less driving in 2020. Thanks for the advice!

The second half of that sentence is a VERY good point.

Not sure what you were going on about re the oil filter.
Your manual will state 2 volumes, with and without the filter.

This is not for your car an exampleCrankcase Service Refill Capacity: 6.3* Litres (Includes Oil Filter)
