Has anyone run 5w-30 oil? I get the manual says 0w-20 but Im sure this is emissions / mpg regulations in the US.
Look at the Middle East owners manual:
No Toyota engineers here on CL so I doubt you'll get any hard feedback to your question. Oil grade and usage really is a personal choice. If you want to play it safe, stick to the owner's manual recommendations. For all anyone knows, the GS engines could be slightly different for different markets.. any Toyota Product and Market executives on CL?
I've been using 10W30 in my Sequoia over the last decade and a half, when the manual recommends 5W30... it's still running.
For the most part, oil is oil. If you want to get technical, go bury your nose over at www.bobistheoilguy.com, makes for interesting reading. Cheers!
I use 5w30, 0w20 isn't really a thing here. Don't know anyone who'd use such a thin oil in a temperate climate.
If you're in the US use 0W20, your government insists - literally.

Good to know. It means all this talk about tight tolerances is dribble. I'll be putting in the 5w-30 next to see if it quiets the chattering valve train noise like other Toyota owners suggest.

I would go with a 0W30 oil living in Colorado if you get some really cold temps/winters, it will be a little easier on the engine/more flow on startup and will be the same weight as the car heats up. There should not be any issue going with a 30 weight oil in these engines, the switch to 0W20 from 5W30 was only done for the slight bump in fuel economy.

Thanks, 5w-30 should be good to around -30C which is more than enough.
I have 2 Lexus (GS and ES) and 1 Toyota (Highlander). All the engines are 2GR, ES and GS requires 5W-30, but Highlander need 0W-20. That's good to know we can totally replace 0W-20 with 5W-30. In this way, I only need to buy one type of oil, which is 5W-30.
ne thing I did notice is that the 2GR on Highlander is noticeable louder than 2GR on ES and GS. Not sure if this is caused by the 0W-20 oil (I opened engine hood to listen, no it is not related to sound insulation).
Our LX has the same recommendation of 0w20. Any other country where the LX and Land Cruiser are sold they recommend 5w30. It’s to eek out .002 mpg…….i only run 5w30.
Always the same about oil.
Internet warriors always knows more than the manufacturer.
Just put in the damn oil it says and be done.
0w20 in Sweden here with cold winters. No issues of course.
Here is the other problem although some will say "I ran a different weight, had no problem" and not even know they have a problem running a different than 0w20 weight than spec'd for.
