Not only does city stop-'n-go driving cause more rapid wear compared to all highway driving, but many areas of the country use extremely course and abrasive aggregate in their road pavement (asphalt & concrete). If, for example, an area of the country typically uses something like sharp granite rock aggregate in their road and highway paving composition you may not get more than 20k miles from a set of tires with a Treadwear Rating of 700 and a mileage warranty of 70,000 miles.

Lots of factors goes into the mileage one can expect from their tires:

Driving Habits: Aggressive wanna be racecar driver vs Grandma going to church
City Driving or Highway Driving: Constant stop-'n-go and always turning/scrubbing vs Always straight
Pavement Aggregate Composition - Sharp vs Smooth
Extreme Temperatures and Radiation - Heat, cold, radiation, UV
Weight of Vehicle: 6,000 lb vs 3,000 lb
Tire treadwear Rating: Soft (Wanna be) Boy Street Racer 100 rating vs Comfort, Quiet yet Harder 700 rating
Tire Pressure: Lower than recommended psi causes greater wear vs Higher than recommended psi for reduced wear

Got 44K out of my P7 All Season Plus, and had another 5K before wear bars on a couple of tires. Went back with the Plus II because I loved the ride and quietness of the tires. Many miles on curvy mountain roads and the only complaint I had was they became a little slick on wet town streets toward the end.

Sport vehicles have low profile tires that doo not flex when you make a corner. Instead of flexing they wear. 40k is excellent for a low profile tire.

I can't wait until they wear out so that I can get some Michelins.

The reviews are great on these tires. I'll probably get these when my OEM Dunlops are wormed out. Not sure what other good options if not Michelins.

RWD selection is limited unless +10 wider.

Do you really need 'ultimate high performance' summer only tires on a 4,000lb luxury 4-door family sedan?

Only if you want the stiffest sidewall to feel bumps/read imperfections better with your butt.

I never had them so I can't tell ya. Unless I got up in size +10, for RWD only there aren't lots of options as in AWD ones.
