Just got a quote for 850.00 to change the front brakes on a 15' GS350 F sport from the dealer. Decided I'm gonna do it myself
Is there anything special about the F sport? that i should know about for the front brakes. They kinda of squeal for the first 5 mins after you pull off but after that they are quiet and it stop fine.
I thought its just the rust coming off because the car sits sometimes for 3-4 days at a time.
Dealer said still 6/32 of pad left. They said the shims need to be replaced
I have changed brakes and rotors before on cars and usually the shims come with the brake pads.
The car has been sitting a lot this year due to covid
Its the AWD version would that make a difference?
If the F sport is 850.00 the F must be in the thousands?
Yeah this is just for the pads. The car only has 70k miles on it

The only thing I have dealers/shops do are the things I can't do.
The first thing you should do is inspect the rotors and pads for yourself. Nothing like eyeballing it see what the facts are.
Second, I'd look up the cost of parts. If you are only doing pads, the parts can't be more than $50 unless you are going exotic. The most expensive Akebono pads at Advance are $102 here.
If you don't need rotors, it is not a difficult job and should not take more than an hour if you have the proper tools, jack, stands, etc. If you've done other rotors and pads, this isn't that different.
Considering you can buy the OEM front and rear brake pads from mylparts.com or any online Lexus dealer for $110 plus shipping that is a massive rip off!
The pads are easy to change, 35 minute job, faster when you have a lift and air gun.
The front pad you just have to take the wheel off, remove a metal pin and retainer holding the pad in, then pull the pads, reset the calipers, put the pin/retainer back in, and put the wheel back on.
The rear pads once you remove the wheels, it's literally one bolt you have to remove to swing the caliper out of the way to get the pads.
Afterwards don't forget to pump your brakes before starting the car.
If you diy at home you'll spend more time jacking up the car, removing/remounting/torquing the wheel then you will changing the pads.
The service department is bread and butter for the dealership, they double and some cases quadruple the billed time to do the job than it actually takes. This example is the stealership at it's finest
Wait I forgot that quote is after 100.00 coupon. So its really 950.00
Also as a tip any Toyota dealer can do all the same work on your car, they have access to the same exact parts and diagnostic software(techstream). Their hourly rate is less than Lexus, but still gonna be high. best prices would be an independent mechanic, or cheapest is DIY.
Something is not right about this! Just replacing the front brake pads and shims and resurfacing the rotors should not cost $850 (actually $950 less $100 savings coupon). It must include new rotors for it to be that much. I'd give the dealership a call to find out. If not, I'd suggest buying OE brake pads and shims and have a reputable brake shop resurface the rotors and install the new brake pads and shims.

$950 for just pads! That's not right. I was quoted that amount on my IS200t F-Sport with new pads and rotors. I told them to forget about it and I ordered the parts on Rockauto.com.
Agreed with others - they must be including rotors, pads and shims with labor at those prices. Nothing special or unique about the pads/rotors/shims on the AWD models of the 4GS.
Just to give you an idea, below is my invoice for parts two years ago on my NON F-sport for $287 - front pads, rotors and shims (labor was done for another $150 with a local mechanic):
Damn I just re-read the title and this is for the front pads replacement only? I thought it was for all four.
I did my own front pads replacement on my last GS and only costed me $100 something for the parts and about 30 mins to 1 hr of self labor. I think I have a video of it somewhere.
Thats way too expensive. If you have done brake pads before on other cars, you will find the GS brake pads replacement much easier. You can literally do it with an angled pliers. The pads and shims cost around 80 bucks shipped.
Huge difference between 2015 F-Sport & standard ! I installed Auto Zone ceramic pads on my front @ 30K miles & it now has 60K miles. I bought rear pads too but they were hardly worn at the time.
I have another car for sport driving so I do very little of that in the GS.

Front brake rotors are usually larger on front engine cars because most of the weight and 90% of the braking is done there. The rear brakes are often smaller and last twice as long or more.
