Default I have 13 to 16 Full Screen Navi upgrade - DIY Help please?

Hi,

I just got the 2016 Info screen and ML Head unit to put in my 2013 Lux that has ML already. I need to do the swap out, and need some help here please. I have read many threads here in the past starting with the 1st Member who did the 13 - 15 then 15 to 16. Now that I search I can't find and figure out if there is a Cable I need or anything else to do this. I thought I remembered peasods the Mod Guru telling me that it was plug and play for 13 -16 and that there would just be one extra blank plug in left.

So can someone tell me if it plug and play, or do I need some extra cables for everything to work still?
Also I think I know how to remove the Head unit and Display, but is there a DYI instruction somewhere on removal?

I did search but could not find clearly the above exact 2 things for 2013 to 2016 swap. Right now I am not adding any kind of car play adapter or anything else yet. Just the 2013 ML to 2016 ML to Head Unit and Display. Thanks.

Can you post a pic of the 2013 screen too when you get it out please?
TIA

I will do, but I was hoping to have what's needed so I could just make the swap. Still waiting on someone who knows or done this year ones.

I haven't done this mod, but below are the two topics by @peasodos who first performed this mod, put up a semi-DIY thread, and helped others perform this same mod in the past.

He first went from a 2013 head-unit only to a 2015 head-unit only: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/gs-...-2013-gsh.html

Then went from a 2015 head unit to a 2017 head unit + 2017 display: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/gs-...-2013-gsh.html

I think this special cable is what you'll need: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/gs-...l#post10343260

Also peasodos mentioned switching the hand controls on the center console: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/gs-...l#post10645066

I can't help further but perhaps peasodos or others can chime in. Good luck and please document your progress so it helps others! Perhaps we can get a detailed DIY on this.

Hey thanks, I'm going to post in that thread for help. We should make this a sticky or something for each year. Its a little complex and confusing, especially for the 2013 not being Plug and play for the full screen upgrade. Hopefully someone will help. Thanks!

Because it was asked and for reference here if you have a 2013 GS, here is a pic of the back of the Head unit that you know what it looks like. There are side by side pics also in the threads Im2 was nice enough to link also.

So you need two adapters that can be found on CarToys. Refer to the main thread.

You will also need a video cable. This video cable is from a 2015+. Without that cable, it cannot be done.

Other than that, it’s all plug and play.

Take a look at the various BeatSonic installation instruction videos on YouTube. They will show how to remove the radio and screen as part of the installation process for their various products.

So yea after being pointed to some links, I did alot of reading through them last night. Thanks to peasodos work and many others, including itsraysgs, and some more members I think I have it figured out, I hope. I did just test it out with no luck, and got the half screen blank, half screen snowy, and full Pink screen as I later saw peasodos mentioned.

The new 16 ML Head unit, trying in my 13 ML left me with 4 plugs that could not match up to plug in. I could tell 2 were a mini coax looking and figured they were Antenna connections ex. GPS, Sat Radio and am/fm I guessed? But was unsure about the other 2?

From the post here from itsraysgs I see now the Video cable I was missing was why I got a Blank screen. That takes care of 3 connections but still leave 1 left that I am uncertain of from my 13 wires? Maybe don't need it to plug in from my 13 to 16 unit?

I see where I can get the 2 Antenna connectors from, but cant seem to find that Video cable anywhere? Anyone know where I can get that Video cable for this from?

Am I correct that these are what I need in the Pics below? Thank all!

You have to install a 2016+ display along with the 2016+ head unit otherwise it will not work with the 2013 display. The video cable is two wires, if your 2016+ head unit came with a cut wire harness, you can cut your cars video cable and splice in the new connector for the 2016.

Otherwise you can't buy the video cable unless you buy the entire harness for the dash. I found a cheap used damaged dash harness from I think an RX and harvested the video cable wire. Another member cut his factory video wire and spliced in the 2016 plug.

Many times the junkyards just cut the wiring harness for the radio like this, then you can harvest the video plug and splice it into your factory wiring. Any 2016+ RX, ES, RC will all have this same video cable plug. Just search eBay and if you find one with the wire cut ask for a price on the wires.

Hey yea thanks. So I do have a 2016 ML Head unit, and a 2016 ML car Display. I got it from cl member tomex77 on Sat. He did the plug and play upgrade in his 15 and even had the New Maps installed too then pulled it when his 15 GS got totaled.

Being a Dummy there is something I am still trying to figure out. So if I get a used Harness which I looked and is hard to find. They are from $250 - $800 on ebay. The part is, when I cut it, that only gives me 1 end Male connector right? Where do I get the other? Just cut the Harness one then splice my Factory one? Just 2 wires? Thanks Man this is such a Headache, amazing Tribute to you that you figured this out.

What a PITA the 2013 is Modding just about anything. Next on my list is I did find a deal on Brand new 2020 Taillights, now got to Test the different lead wires from each light function, then find a Resistor I guess. I have never had so many problems doing car mods before this 2013 GS. I feel like I'm incompetent. I can installed Headers but can't swap out a Radio.

You unravel the entire harness until you get to the other end of the cable. Don't pay over $300 for a used harness. Any 2016+ Lexus with the same generation navigation will have the same video cable on the harness.

This cable goes directly from the back of the 12.3" display to your head unit. I had an extra harness couple years ago, but sold it to another member.

Ok I just found this you posted, but the 1st one I posted looks different? I guess this is what you are talking about to unravel?

I just searched ebay to see if I could find a harness with one for cheap on any 2016 up Lexus. Could not. This is going to be hard to find. I may have to call some Lexus only parts yards and beg someone to find me one.
