How's the 4th GS (AWD)'s 6 speed transmission when it comes to shifting using paddle shifters? Does it react fast or slow?

Kinda slow then again - not really expecting it to be fast either.. it's sufficient

I would say it's performance is acceptable for what it is. Transmission does hold gear when in manual mode and will not downshift for you, on upshifts if traction and esp are off it will bounce of rev limiter in s+.

It’s slower when compared with others in the same space. However the 6 speed is perfect for me. It’s damn near bulletproof and never gear hunts like the 8 speeds.

Is the 8 speed faster? The 8 speed shifts like a dream in manual and S+ mode. In auto mode though, this thing drives like a grandma-mobile.

I read somewhere that the 8 speed has more top-end than the 6 speed.

Correct, the top gear multiplication ratio (including the differential gear) is 2.22 on the 6 speed vs. 2.15 on the 8 speed, giving the 8 speed a slight top speed edge, assuming max rpm is the same. The top gear is actually steeper in the 8 speed but the lower differential gear ratio lowers the ultimate multiplication to the ground.

It is not as good as the Aisin 8speed or the ZF 8 speed, but it is fairly responsive and it does rev match. In S/S+, over 3500rpm, it is much more responsive. The downshifts, while crisp, are not always perfectly smooth.

It is not great on the highway for dropping gears, you are better off leaving the car in Auto and mashing it; it will downshift itself much faster than if you tap down 3 gears, and there really is no point in tapping upshifts. Where it does shine is on a twisty road where you're constantly shuffling between 2nd and 3rd with hard acceleration and braking. I bought my car for exactly this purpose, to ferry me comfortably on my 130 mile round trip highway commute and still be fun and engaging on local mountain roads whenever I get the chance.

I like the tranny in my 2013 better than my 2018. 2018 is sluggish unless using manual mode.

The 6 speed in my RWD is the reason I have passed on going to the newer model a few times now. I've driven many of the 8speed GS's. They all hunted for gears to much for me. I hated making some turns going off the gas pedal to the brake and back to the gas pedal, as it tried to downshift/upshift, and was kinda lost in mid turn.

Contrary to what many say, the 8 speed is no more smoother that the 6 speed. The 6 speed is very smooth. Almost too smooth on the shifts for my taste. Stock to stock, then later with Mods to both, I have ran 2 of the 8 speed GS's from a stop and from a roll on, and at highway speed. My 13 6speed walked on both newer 8 speed GS's from all speeds every time. We even switched drivers and cars, and the same resulted. One of my friends who upgrade from a 13 to a 19 GS350 said the same that he could definitely tell the difference that the 13 was fasted more responsive and did not hunt gears like the 8 speed. The 8 speed was likely put in from the 6 speed for improved fuel economy.

The Top speed was tested to be 1-2 mph faster. It was like 142mph on the 13 vs 143 or 144. Tires and wind, could even change that.

I had the 6 speed AWD GS and now I have the 8 speed AWD RX. The 8 speed gear hunting is horrendous. I would go back to a 6 speed any day.

2013-2015 GS350 is quicker then 2016+ GS's, it shows in tested acceleration runs. I test drove a 8 speed 2016 and it just felt sluggish, I thought something was wrong with the car or I was in some kind of really aggressive eco mode, came away totally turned off and was happy to get back into my GS430. When I got my 2014 GS350 AWD it felt much better, still didn't quite have the torque of my GS430 but close if not slightly better acceleration wise and very smooth, maybe smoother transmission then in my GS430.

Exactly why I keep my 13 GS350 with 39k. I guess if I had the 8 speed I would have to deal with it, but the 8speed felt like a sluggish to respond CVT that hunted and delayed way too much for me.

I even tried the manual mode, every one I drove even klunked, felt like it would shift to the wrong gear. In sport mode when I came off the pedal it drove me crazy spinning excessive unneeded rpm's.
