Default Anyone replace their airbag cover (From Elvin)

CL,
Has anyone replaced their airbag cover? I am getting a new one from Elvin, see images. I wondered how difficult is to remove the explosive device from the airbag itself!

I have already swapped my steering wheel now it is the airbag turn. Mods never end!!

Thanks all for your help.

Hardest part is removing the airbag from the steering wheel, 3 pins to depress. The part your talking about is super easy, just 4 bolts. The airbag has zero chance of deploying if you disconnect the battery and let the car sit for 5 minutes. You could be as rough with it as you want and nothing will happen. I've removed my airbag before to swap the steering wheel.

The thing that makes those explode are the airbag sensors behind the front bumper right? As long as those sensors are not smashed, airbags shouldn't blow up. I could be wrong though.

No just power/electrical signal to the leads on the airbag connectors. Hook it up to a 12v battery if you want it to explode.

I have taken the steering wheel off and swapped it with CF one. I disconnected the battery and let the car sit for 15 mins before touching anything ensuring the airbag was drained completely. This what I will do this time as well.

What did Elvin charge? He told me $450 for the whole airbag and wouldn't sell me the cover only.

I took my chances and ordered from here for $224 shipped to my door:

Leon Carbon fiber had a sale for $200 earlier this year but they wanted to charge me $250 when I asked recently.

correct! Same price
but I think the rest just make the cover without the airbag itself. I think Elvin orders the OEM airbag with the cover and I think this why the cost is higher!
I could be wrong though. So double check it.

Here is a video of swapping just the outside cover and not unbolting the airbag. I think I basically bought the same thing and my install would be like the video. This way I retain the original airbag and igniter.

@peasodos

This makes sense. I just hope removing the 4 bolts from the explosive device doesn't cause it to explode!

You should weight the OEM cover and the new cover. Weight differences will throw the timing of the inflation off in a crash.

Yeah I highly doubt there that could happen just unbolting it.

2 more weeks and I receive it. I went with light beige/tan stitching to match the stitching on my dash.

Just a word of caution. The the OEM cover is designed to crack open when the airbag deploys. Cracking open quicky allows the airbag to inflate.

The aftermarket cover with its synthetic covering over the plastic shell is NOT PROVEN to not delay or impact the inflation of the airbag due to extra covering.

Here are some photos:

Yes these rip open the same way. It's the same factory airbag cover. Lexus has leather wrapped covers for the LS, LC, and some other models, so nothing new here.
