The more city driving I did the more the difference would be, sometimes 1mpg or more.
So premium is better? My ES is averaging about the same as my GS and it's using regular 87. I'd love to get a little more kick out of that car and get better MPG if using 91 would be beneficial.

Keep your Lexus GS well maintained for peak efficiency and performance like it was designed for, and stop wasting money on using twice as much gas.

Downtown City cruising.

Put some Sunoco or Shell premium and add one bottle of this with 1/2 to 3/4 tank of gas, to get you KCLV up. Let me know what happened.

In fact 1st, run this for a same 1/2 to 3/4 tank of snake oil 1st. Than do the Octane booster on the next 1/2 to 3/4. A waste of $10 & be careful that your GS350 motor does not blow up.

I've tested it almost everyday and I have not blown up, not yet anyway.

That's been my experience too. I made a trip from Texas to Vegas, all 87 octane one way and all 93/91 coming back. 93/91 yielded 1-1.5 better mpg. This was all highway cruising, never tried to do this with city driving because there are a lot more variables there. So the payback cost of premium gas over regular was enough to cover the additional cost. Again just my unscientific results. Oh and Shell 93 octane was $5.35 today in San Antonio. ouch

Oh no, the regular vs. premium gas discussion is coming. I can feel it. My entire point is purely economic only. The simple equation is if Premium gas is 10% per gallon more than regular, then you need to get 10% or more better gas mileage to break even on the gas cost. So 1.5 mpg better gas mileage means break even would be you average 15 mpg on regular, which hopefully your car gets better mileage, especially on the highway. If it does, there is not an economic reason to buy premium gas over regular. Lexus engine does require premium for peak performance though.

My buddy in the same car gets over 300 miles to his tank.. that averages him around 19mpg. THATS A HUGE DIFFERENCE. Over 100 miles difference to a tank. anybody else averaging some odd numbers ?

I have the 8spd transmission and I drive in normal mode 90% of the time. I do use Sport + just for the tighter steering on the highways, never really high revving.
how are your fuel trims? What are your maf readings? Have you tired putting back the factory airbox with new factory filter? So many variables, it's hard to determine poor mpg without a thorough diagnostic.

@ItzFilyO - No, you just need to move! California is increasing their gasoline tax effective today, July 1.

24-26 mpg consistently for ten years, 100% in town, no highway driving.

With the car's fuel consumption rating of 19 city / 29 highway - - your claimed 24-26 mpg for city driving (with no highway driving) is, well unbelievable!

Unless your 'in town' driving has no stop lights, no stop signs, no traffic and no places to stop and visit.

And I should be concerned if you believe it because?

I can get the same with my 13. Sometimes higher. Depends on your car condition and your right foot, both accel and brake. What year is your car?
