OP, most effective way to remove any current carbon buildup is to remove the heads to clean the chambers and valves. To prevent further buildup, use quality gas and/or fuel cleaners like Techron. The most effective measure is installing the aforementioned oil catch can.

Edit note: you could use a borescope to view current carbon buildup. But not much you can do about it … short of removing the heads. Chris Fix did have some success with on the shelf chemicals.

Most best is to deter the build up, and not let it get build up.
