Lexus GS F at Lightning Lap 2016

ouch... didn't even beat the dodge.

Technically it has 7 more hp than the Corvette But way less torque haha.
But come on.. Dodge is... dodge lol. They burn tires and break down, they're not a lightning lap competitor unless you get a little ACR treatment. Even being down on power I was hoping the braking and suspension on the GS F would make them a little more competitive. I still absolutely love the GS F and would trade my Corvette straight across for one if a dealer were dumb enough, but that won't be happening lol. I would have bought one at a more realistic price.

These two cars are very different beasts. To me it was no surprise that the Charger Hellcat handles as well as it does on the track. It's super heavy and has much too little grip but you would be shocked how well it handles compared to what you might be programmed to think of when you hear "Dodge" and "Hellcat" together. It's got a nice bit of tech and an interior that is good though clearly not Lexus GS standard but with an absolutely glorious exhaust note (in track mode). For most everyday driving it will handle very nicely but if you are injudicious with your throttle inputs you'll just roast tires. Watch the video and how he's got to be very easy on the throttle. It just won't put the power down.
The GS F seems to be setup beautifully for handling but is either underpowered or overpriced depending on how you look at it (Talking original and current MSRP here now). However the trade-off here is you get a much nicer interior, a more nimble car, a wonderful aural soundtrack. It will be fun to tackle any off-ramp or typical road driving in this car based on the video. I mean watch it carefully. Notice how smooth the steering inputs are. The car seems to handle very nicely and put the power down well.
Either is a great choice with slightly different strengths that I think will lead towards which a particular person prefers.
I'm a touch surprised by this also as there was repaving as well and the track has gotten faster. However the IS-F was 300lbs lighter and the track does favor top end. I wouldn't call C&D fishy, I mean the video is there for you to watch. Seems like he's pushing pretty well. Maybe the GS F would compare better to the IS-F on a different track?
Edit: Just went back and checked the write-up on the IS-F at that time. Hard to reconcile exactly but it seemed to carry more speed through end of sector 2 (109 vs 106) based on the text back then and my guess of watching the GS F video. Top speed was listed as 141 (and change) for the IS-F and the GS F seemed to hit 140 in the video. FWIW....

Given that I had a souped up GS and IS-F previously and made a decision on the GS F and Hellcat (landing on the latter) use that to help judge this feedback.

Let's put this into prospective...
2016 Lightning Lap times at VIR:
2:44.2 -- 2016 Dodge Viper ACR
2:45.1 -- 2016 Ferrari 488GTB
2:47.0 -- 2016 Porsche 911 GT3 RS
2:47.1 -- 2017 Corvette Grand Sport
2:47.4 -- 2016 McLaren 570S
2:50.2 -- 2017 Acura NSX
2:51.8 -- 2016 Mustang GT350R
2:52.9 -- 2017 BMW //M4 GTS
2:54.0 -- 2016 Porsche Cayman GT4
2:54.8 -- 2017 Chevrolet Camaro V8 1LE
2:56.1 -- 2017 Audi R8 V10 Plus
3:01.9 -- 2016 BMW //M2
3:03.5 -- 2016 Dodge Charger Hellcat
3:03.9 -- 2016 Focus RS
3:04.0 -- 2017 Chevrolet Camaro V6 1LE
3:05.9 -- 2016 Lexus GS-F
3:07.7 -- 2016 Audi TTS
The Hellcat has a 372 horsepower advantage over the V6 Camaro and was only 1/2 a second faster. The GS F lost to the V6 Camaro. The GS F even lost to the turbo 4cylinder hatchback Ford Focus RS. And yes, the Camaro is the 1LE package, which is "FE3 suspension components (from the Camaro SS), including dampers, rear cradle mounts, ball-jointed rear toe links and stabilizer bars." It is not on Sport Cups 2 tires or anything, it's just got some suspension and cooling changes. The same type of changes Lexus made for the GS F compared to the standard GS. I feel like both of those cars should have done better. Again, not hating on the GS F, I'd still sacrifice some performance and trade my car straight across for one right now... I'll never drive it that fast on a track so I don't really care about 5-6 seconds on a lap top. The fact still remains that it's just getting out performed in so many areas and costs far to much.
