Default ECU bad capacitor issues?

Trying to get an idea of how wide spread the capacitor issue is on various models/years. Have you had problems related to leaking capacitors in your OEM ECU?

Some of the common symptoms of this are:

engine running bad - poor power/acceleration - can be difficult to reach much speed or RPM
often very hard to start, requires starting fluid
transmission will not automatically shift, only manual shift is possible
no A/C compressor operation
idle speed rolling up and down, or sometimes too low and sometimes too high
speedometer not working reliably
speed (cruise) control not working
tachometer not working sometimes
air bag light flickering intermittently
A/C going into reset with flashing front defog light
check engine light on, but no codes stored
ECU not communicating with scanners or not displaying codes with jumper installed
bad sulfur exhaust smell

I have acquired a basket case 94 GS300 that sat for about 6mo-1year without running - Fixed all the mechanical issues but engine management seems erratic ( hard to start, won't stay running) - Opened the ECU and found all the caps leaking. Just ordered the caps, will report results.

Saw your post in LS section also. Glad this info helped you out. I've seen posts regarding the 2JZ and 1JZ ECU capacitors as well. It isn't confined to Toyota products...

I feel my idle control problem might be linked to this, needing to restart my car often to get my idle to stop from lunging down to 100-200 rpm, when I restart it stays at 1000-1100 rpm. Although I've never taken my ECU apart on my 230k mile GS300 yet...

I have a good ecu from 93 gs300 if anyone wants to go that route. Worked great up till I swapped it out for Aristo.

These particular caps have a service life about 10-12 years. About now, many of our older cars are easily sent of the buy the farm the older they get. We all know how wonderful that 2JZ is so for those who are long time owners, this budget fix will keep the car going.

2JZ has at least as many capacitor problems as 1UZ!

cannot recommend driftmotion as a good place to replace caps, seen a lot of hacked work from them and using incorrect caps - the lowball price is a good clue that something is being short-cutted in the process. Find a reputable pro solderer and order your own correct caps from the links in my ECU thread.

One thing that people don't realize is that there is a ton of counterfeit caps out there, it is a real widespread problem - I only recommend ordering from Digi-Key, because they are the largest vendor who is a factory authorized distributor of all of the 4 good capacitor brands!

Default ecu

I rebuilt my ecu my self using the correct capacitors from Digi-key and i must say its running responding very well. This is a must for these cars. Especially if u plan on keeping the car for a while.

Default Where to get this done

All, is there a reputable person or shop connected to this forum that can do this work? If so how much is the cost? I have the ability, but I have sold all my tools and my rework bench when I moved to a new home...no more big shop Anyway, I am willing to pay for the service, I have a mines tuned ECU that is beginning to show signs that this issue is cropping up. I really do not want to part with it as it is tuned for my car. Any additional resources would be a huge help. Thank you.

Also, was there a list compiled of the capacitors in the JZS147 ECU? That would be a huge help in ordering.

I am also willing to pay to have this service performed. I just recently purchased my GS300 and it showing many of these symptoms it would be great to have them fixed,

I was just looking searching and it looks like Lextech.org offers ECU repair services. I sent them an email to see if they are willing to repair a 1st Gen ECU. I will let you know.

I finally got my ECU back from LEXTECH.org after the repairs. I haven't had a chance to put many miles on it since I installed the ECU but I can already tell a few differences. It idles smoother, shifts are better and the AC doesn't cycle continuously like before!
