Conversion from 98-00 HDD Navi to 01-05 DVD Navi
As promised, I just wanted to give a little write up and show some pictures of my conversion from a 98-00 oem hdd navi to the 01-05 oem dvd navi. The main reason I wanted to upgrade the navi was because I wanted to add the vaistech ipod module since there wasn’t any ipod solutions for the 98-00 GS. I also wanted to have the newer map data (this was before Lexus announced the 2005 hard drive update)
Since I already had a navi system the original goal was to make the entire conversion plug and play, but due to connector availability from Toyota I was only able to complete half of this goal. The install of the Navigation ECU (Computer) is completely plug and play with an adapter harness but I had to splice some of the connections for display install because some connectors were not available to make it completely plug and play. Everything works as it should except for the tip info screen #1 which calculates the cruising range, distance after refueling, and average speed. I think this is a wiring problem but I need to look into this more.
When I did my install I added the vaistech ipod module, upgraded the Navigation ECU (Computer) to the Gen 4 version 86841-50090 (Superceded by Part Number 868410E010), added the coastaletech Navigation Enhancement Kit to auto press the “I agree” screen and auto enter code to allow entering of destinations while moving. The coastaletech only works with the Gen 4 computer.
I hooked up the optional microphone to the gen4 system but the voice recognition was so bad that I decided not to install it and I sold the mic.
I found a complete system on ebay for $1200 and got the wiring diagrams from the Toyota Technical Information System website. After I sold my old system for $1200 my total cost was about $500 doing the install myself.
To complete the install you need the following:
Navigation Display Unit (display, radio, a/c computer)
Navigation ECU (Computer) The Gen 4 ecu is NOT necessary (you can use a Gen 2 or 3 Ecu).
Gateway ECU
Navigation Antenna.
Display and Navi ECU connectors
Connector terminals
I purchased all the parts on ebay and from the Toyota dealer. The Display and Navi ECU connectors are relatively cheap but the connector terminals are very expensive so I used terminals from similar radio harness kits I got off ebay.
I am also planning to do the following upgrades:
Add the factory DVD changer (I have one that is currently getting repaired and I will install it when I get it back)
Add a GS430 steering wheel.

That means it can be done on the LS.... I guess.. very interesting... Using the vaistech is VERY intriguing.... Im going to do some research.... All you need is the stock screen right?
Do buttons work as they should?
When you say you need the display.. do you need the display unit OR the whole dash part?

Awesome work.
Is this the "I Agree" and Destination input hack you were talking about?

Wow......I am speechless. This upgrade is lightyears ahead of the HDD based NAV. I upgraded to HDD NAV for my 99GS about a year ago and now I definitely want to look into this.
I will shoot you a PM as I have a million questions.

Absolutely stunning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You gotta do it as ''Official thread" for all '98-00 GS models since they are getting older.........
It is an example of great idea, for
this info, it is ''PRICELESS''
Thanks bro
