Default Motor mounts

Hello,
I have a 1999 GS 400 with 130k miles and was told that my motor mounts were split. I have not noticed any change in the way the car drives. Has anyone had this problem ? thanks in advance, mike

When the car is warm (idle has gone down), turn on the AC. If you feel a pretty hard click, then your mount is done. After I changed my mounts on my 99 GS400 (w/128k at the time), my car is smooth. You dont even feel the AC compressor engaging.

Also, if you're at a stoplight and you can feel vibration through the steering, then that also points to bad engine mounts.

Yea, agreed with GSteg, and if you have 130k miles, your mounts are deffinatelly done, if they were not replaced before.

Don't forget that the mounts limit the movement of the engine. Problem with mounts (if not attended to real quick) gets transferred to transmission and exhaust (rigid connections).

What does it cost to have the motor mounts replaced? Is it a DIYer? I think mine are just getting bad. I am having some engine vibration through the steering while sitting still with the car in gear. If I put it in neutral, no vibration. Does this sound like bad motor mounts?

This sounds exactly like the motor mounts. It is not a DIY job. The engine has to get tilted/lifted a little bit. Oil filter has to come out as well. Don't mess with it unless you like to spend a lot of time under the car.

Tex-how many miles do you have and when was you car's in service date? if you are still under 6 year/ 70k warranty this is covered free of charge. I just had mine done under warranty.

chuckb is lucky. I had to actually pay. But I have a great connection, so my cost should not be considered.

not really. a lady in her mid 40s owned the car until 21k miles, the rest was me. I've power braked it a few times and I get on it here and there, but nothing really abusive.

even though the car only has 37k miles, the mounts are still 6 years old and between the 325lbs of torque and the fact that lexus makes them pretty soft to begin with they were starting to wear. mine was only noticable at low idle and since I still had warranty I took advantage of it.

I think it would cost about $600-700 if you paid the dealer to do it, and that's including the trans mount too.

Remember this is rubber we're talking about. Rubber go bad over time. Leave the mounts on the street for 6 years without touching them. Chemistry says the rubber will weaken over time. Plus it's under our engine so it's exposed to a lot of heat, which is one of the things rubber does not like
