Default Whiny 2GS in the extreme cold

When it's really cold out (below freezing), my 2GS makes a humming / whining noise at about 35mph until it warms up. It's plenty audible. Doesn't start until I hit about 35mph and goes away by 40mph, regardless of whether I'm acelerating through that range or decelerating through it. It's not the radio and doesn't sonud like anything is breaking. Is it transmission or gear whine? Does anyone else experience it?

When was the last time you changed the serpentine belt? That's the first thing I would check.

Sounds normal... i have a similar issue... gets worse in the cold... but it goes away a few minutes.

It almost sounds like a quiet supercharger

My car (GS400) makes the same noise when it's cold outside. The noise is coming from rear differential, which uses heavy oil. It takes some time for that oil to warm up.

Just making sure that all the belt component is well lubricated. You might have to grease it up a bit on the pulleys. Agreed with Grand LS...it usually does that when it cold...at least that what she says....

I never knew that the rear diff. could be making a noise like that, I had the same problem a while back and it was the serpentine belt. I'm in Chicago so it does get pretty cold and I have never heard the diff. make any noises.

No noise from my rear.....scratch that.....my cars rear end. Hot or cold. My Durango made some noise once. A few hours later it was being towed to Dodge for a warranty diff+lsd.

I skipped the invisible supercharger and went straight for the invisible twin turbo. Yeah baby.

Default cold weather whining noise, 30-40 mph, independent of engine

So my gs400 recently started making a loud medium pitch whining noise around 30 mph to 40 mph, reaching a peak around the middle. It goes from soft to very loud and annoying. It comes from the front (middle?) of the car, someone has suggested the power steering. It was slightly below full, now filled up, but the problem is exactly the same. Have not bled it. It only happens when it is cold and the car is not warmed up. So this is early morning going to work and I get an earache.

Despite it not occurring when it is warmed up, it still happens when I put my automatic in neutral, or change the gears to change the engine speed. It is independent of throttle. It's driving me nuts!

Any suggestions for diagnosis appreciated!

thanks for the link, did you determine it was the rear diff?

mine really sounds like its coming from the front though, which made it seem like someone had broken into my garage and installed a supercharger, but alas that was not the case. And yeah it gets quiiite loud.

good to know it others have had it..

sakataj, I appreciate you helping new members locate threads but please do so without the name calling and complaining... help maintain our sense of community by welcoming new members and educating rather than berating. It's the old teach them to fish trick.... (he was also linked to this exact thread by the other member and I've since merged them).

Johnnyz, welcome to Club Lexus.
