Default I am amazed at how proficient you guys are at working on your cars.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a DIY post on how to mine ore to smelt steel to forge your own crankshaft on this board. What a great resource. I am taking a huge leap and replacing my brake rotors all around tomorrow and fully expect to have to seek help here at some point in the process. I have no doubt I will find it. Thanks to all in advance.

You shouldn't have any issues finding a DIY for the GS brakes.. There is tons of info on CL for DIY.. I'll try to find a link...

Here you go... GL...

Working on cars is easy my friend. Just taking things apart and remembering how to put them back together. When you first get started you should have a decent camera on hand to take pictures every step of the way. It helps you remember what you have to do in the future if you need to replace something again and it can also help you remember what you need to do to put something back together. Most of us learn from first hand experience. Just go for it and you'll eventually get it done; most of the time with the help of others; some times all by yourself. Now fabricating things is a whole other story, but replacing parts is really quite simple. Have a go at it and good luck on the rotor replacement.

Awesome. Thanks for that link. I suppose I need to find some 12mm bolts to get my oem rotors off now.

If it wasn't for these forums, I would never know how to work on my car. It's really good to know your way around your own car and it saves a lot of money if you can do things yourself.

Plus I take more pride in being able to work on my car myself than paying someone to do it. No offense to anyone who doesn't have the time and inclination to do their own work but I take pride in looking at my car and knowing almost everything on it has been done with my own too hands.

I got the impression that you threaded 12mm bolts (or so) into holes on the oem rotors in order to push the rotor off of the car. I seem to recall someone asking just what exact size bolt they would need for that process in another thread. Am I wrong?

The head of the bolt can be turned with either a 12 or 13mm socket depending on the bolt, the thread is like a M6x1.5 or something like that(if I remember correctly...this is off the top of my head lol). Or it could be a M8x1.5, but I think its a M6.

+1

My first mod done in 2001 on my 1999 GS3 (L-tuned suspension/wheels) but hadn't used CL as a reference. Normal with my track record, I would have sold my car to buy something else by 03' or 04' but because of the knowledge share available here I continue to perform upgrades instead of replacing OEM when parts where out, I’m a more knowledgeable consumer when I do need to go to the stealership, and have the support of a lot of really cool and helpful folks on the site.

Because of CL I have a VERY reliable daily driver that I can fix if needed.

Replacing brake pads and rotors is a cake walk.
Most serviceable things on cars are not complicated but just take a lot of time.

If time is not of essence to you, you can do a lot of things... everything besides my paint job on my car was done by myself.
