If you want to mount Droid/iPhone in 3GS
I was inquiring about this short while ago in here after I got my Droid X, and went through a number of different options until I find this one. I don't have NAV in my 3GS so my primary goal was to find a spot to place my phone horizontally where it’s within a reach and doesn't get much sun glare.
This one is probably the cleanest install you can have without any GPS mounts or bean bag/suction cup. I got SoundGate M2 mount which you can pick up for under $10. It does uses 3M tape for the base, but it can be removed with a potty knife later without a trace.
here are the pics:
and the disc you need to stick to your phone or whatever multimedia device you want to use. This one below is Droid X (yeah, BMF with 4.3" screen) where I stick it to the gel case.
I think I would have done this even if I would have NAV with a car because in my opinion nothing beats Google Maps/Nav with always up to date maps, free traffic, and voice turn-by-turn.

Since I'm on a subject and I see fellow DX users DX drains a lot of current when you have NAV/GPS and Bluetooth and screen stays on. Since it has 1500mAh battery, you need to get usb car charger to handle this load otherwise you will be discharging battery at a faster rate than charging it up. You need to use 2.1A iPad chargers. I'm using Griffin PowerJolt2 which is one of the best. Also, USB cable usually made for PC and use thin 28AWG wires since PC's usb port can only supply 500mA of current. When you charging up such a monster like DX or HTC EVO, you need special 28/24AWG wires where a thicker 24gauge wires used for +5V/GND. I'm using the one from Monoprice, 28/24AWG, 6ft, and they also carry 3ft and 10ft cables. Very cheap price, but highly reliable.
This setup is not just for Droid X but any smart phone. I've been testing it in the car for two days now, going over bumps, potholes and its holding up pretty good!

I use the vent mount.
Akron SM310 : Mini Grip Universal Windshield, Air Vent, Dashboard, and Console Cell Phone Mount
It fits perfectly on my GS. I love it. If I had to complain about something, it might be that I'd like the neck to be an inch or two longer.
