Started a few hours ago and now it’s dead
05 GX470. New battery from Toyota shop last week. Started a few hours ago and now it’s dead. This problem is why I took it in. (No NAV)
since leaving the shop, it’s worked fine for the past week. This morning I left the house around 4 AM and it started like normal. I just went out to take my daughter to school and all the lights on the dash came on like normal, I turn the car on to start, and it went.”click” then had no power. Try it again and nothing. Now the battery is dead, and the gas indicator will give a little bump and that’s about it. The only electrical issue I can think of that might even possibly draw. The battery would be either my bad battery in the key fob or the bad air shock on the rear right side but I don’t ever hear the pump kick on. Any help would be greatly appreciated, this is my first GX and I’m starting to wonder.

Do you have a multimeter? Are you saying "now the battery is dead" because it didn't start, or have you checked the voltage at the battery and confirmed it's dead? Could be loose battery terminals as well, seeing as the battery was just replaced.

I do not, but the terminals are solid, I spent the last half hour playing with it. Check this out. I use my jump box to jump it, and it starts right up and gives me all my dash lights solid, the battery light stays on, and about 10 seconds later, the car just stops running, it shuts off and goes dead. I disconnect the jump box and let it reset, but I leave the car in the on position. What I saw it do was something really weird. It would start off with barely showing my dash lights flickering at best and then about 15 Dash 20 seconds later, I have full lights, power windows are back , and then I go to start again and “click” - Nothing. The dash lights go back down to a very faint flicker at best and then leaving the car in the on position, the dash lights eventually come back to full brightness within 20 seconds. I also tried then re-jumping the car and this time when I jumped it, I quickly hit the gas pedal for rpms and my battery light turned off and it stayed running. I let it run for 30 minutes and then turned it off, restarted the process with the GX doing the same issues. As in the image, it starts like this then gives full lights like normal. That’s what I’ve been dealing with. Any ideas?

If you have a multimeter, connect it to the battery terminals, check the voltage and then start the car and the voltage should jump up in the mid/high 13V, low 14V range if my memory serves me right. If it stays in the 12V or below range or fluctuates up and down and is not stable then have your alternator checked. I had my alternator give me intermittent issues and then finally fail before changing it. What you are experiencing is similar to what I was dealing with back then. If you drain your new battery too badly then you will damage a cell and need another new battery.

AutoZone Duralast Gold, part number DLG-5542-6-12, a brand new alternator, not reman'd. About 325.00 cost. May as well replace the belt at the same time, about 70.00 for the Continental belt.
Hardest part about the change is access to lower bolt (12mm or 14mm). You may have to pull the left front wheel and liner for easier access.
Remember to disconnect your battery negative terminal before you begin!!!

Just out of curiosity JKGX470, how many miles does your GX have? The issues you are describing (Alternator and air bags) are pretty typical for higher mileage GX's (well they are all higher mileage by now hahaha). Those issues are normal component wear and tear items for all cars.

Just offering an alternative to overpriced dealer parts and labor. It only takes about an hour or less to change out the alternator.
