Default oveheating question

hey all, I was on a 2000mil USA trip pulling my travel trailer (4000lbs loaded)
for 1 h or so I was pulling up a light incline (in 4th). first i started noticing a slight engine temp gauge bump (70%). after I stopped at a gas station and turned it off/on, it went up to red. i turned it off immediately. here is what I found:
a) the cap on the overflow tank was disconnected and hanging off.
b) overflow tank was full.
c) I could not notice any coolant leaking anywhere (other then some drip of the overflow tank)
d) I opened the radiator cap (while hot) , it was a aftermarket cap: https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c...us-gx470?pos=1
e) when opening, I heard a loud hissing sound, which I assume was air being pulled into the radiator.
f) I was able to fill about 1 gallon of coolant into the radiator directly
g) the heating problem resolved, and during a next stop i replaced the radiator cap with a different model.
h) however since then, the overflow tank seems to be always full, as in the system did not pull any coolant from there. did I overfill the radiator?

then I was able to drive another 1000miles with no issues. could this be as simple as the cap failing on the 'suction' side? reading in the reviews that many people complain it is garbage
where else could it.have leaked out? would be doing a pressure check on the radiator side be sufficient to check the system, if no visible leak is detected?
the engine oil looks very clean

Agree. Use a genuine cap. Also, when was the last time you changed the coolant? Should be done about every three years. Use Toyota Long-Life coolant (red in color). If I recall correctly, the bottles are already a 50:50 premix.

Hey Chip. I thought these trucks use the pink Super Long Life coolant, not red.

Red = Toyota Long Life, concentrated
Pink = Toyota Super Long Life, pre-mixed

They are not the same, and super long life is what you want to use in these trucks.
