Steering Rack Clunking Noise
Hi All,
I heard a clunking noise coming from the front passenger side of my vehicle. By tapping on all of the suspension and steering components, I pinpointed the noise to the inner tie rod. I thought it was odd that it went bad because the mileage is very low. I had a suspicion that it was the steering rack but I prayed it wasn’t. I ordered the replacement tie rods (both sides because I do everything in pairs). I removed the tie rod, and unfortunately it was perfectly fine. The noise is coming from the steering rack piston itself. It has a very minimal amount of movement up and down.
Can I replace the bearing or bushing that it slides in while it is in the vehicle? Or can I insert something else around the shaft? The rack is functioning properly and not leaking.
I am dreading replacing the rack myself so any advice on a different fix would be greatly appreciated.
