Default Steering Wheel Feedback on Rough Road

Had the new GX on a "pseduo" expressway close to work. The speed limit is 55 with the right lane having a lot of asphalt patches on the concrete roadway. Most drivers stay in the left lane because of this. Anyways, I'm in the right lane going over this at about 60 and every patch I'm hitting I can feel the steering wheel like it wants to jerk out of my hands. Any other smooth road, the steering wheel is perfect. Funny thing is, I've driven our RX300 over the same stretch and I never felt the wheel jerk around like that.

Anyone else notice a lot of road feedback coming through their GX steering wheel on less than perfect roads?

Thanks.

Default Bigger tires

Give the GX a break its got bigger tires, heavier suspension, and is geared more for off road slow bumps than 60 mph fast road bumps. The RX is a road vehicle and skinnier tires. I think its incredible that Lexus was able to give us the ride of the GX with all the off road capabilities that this truck can give us. I drove a 04Range Rover and the Lexus felt way better on the road than that 70k truck.

I know the exact feeling you describe over bumps. It does the same thing even while going slowly over speed bumps - the steering wheel jerks left and right, something that I have never experienced in any other car. The other thing that bugs me is when the steering wheel turns when you're braking hard. I wonder what could cause this...

If it pulls when braking, get that checked. Out of the 4 times my wife and I test drove the GX, including when we picked ours up, only one of the demo trucks did that. So it is most likely a problem with your truck and not an overall GX issue. It happened when my wife was test driving and she talked me into not getting the GX because of it. But once we drove another one and the problem was not there, she was fine.

even though the gx is an offroad vehicle, it can act like a front wheel drive if you abuse it. maybe ur alignment or suspension has a problem. ur problem should occur if ur alignment is bad.

most of the power is routed though teh rear wheels unless ur center diff lock is on which is split 50x50

The GX is not exhibiting any signs of torque steer, which I feel very easily on my FWD Jetta due to hard acceleration. This is braking I'm talking about on the GX, and it is not in any way "abusing" it; it's just coming to a stop at a stoplight on a 55mph road. Someone else who was driving the GX the other day noticed it too. Maybe I should get it checked out.

Are you sure? I was under the impression that the Torsen center diff splits torque evenly between the front and rear axles until the tires approach the limit of traction.

Straight from http://www.canadiandriver.com/roadtest/04gx470.htm

The GX 470's full-time four-wheel drive system is the heart of a ‘no compromise’ approach to on- and off-road capability. The system uses a Torsen torque sensing centre differential and operates in four-wheel drive continuously, providing 40 per cent of the engine’s power to the front wheels and 60 per cent to the rear wheels when both axles have equal traction. During steering manoeuvres, this distribution can change to 29 per cent front/71 per cent rear, to enhance vehicle tracking through curves. When the rear wheels slip, the Torsen differential can change the ratio to 53 per cent front/47 per cent rear to control slippage. The centre differential can also be locked with a 50/50 power distribution.

ohh and road feedback to the steering wheel is normal.. this is a truck and not a car.. the gx and teh lx both have teh same type of feedback.. if u want to try go take an lx out and just hop on the nearest grass patch you can find.. me and my dad did this and the dealer was like wtf he had to wash the vehicle when we got back :-D nothing like a real test drive..
