My 03 did not do this so I can only guess this is a new 04 thing/feature.
Right at 5k miles, this MAINT REQD light turned on. I find this really annoying. I spoke to the dealer and he indicated that this basically reminds you to have the vehicle serviced.
Anyway to reset the MAINT REQD light?

I was also irritated by this. I think it is actually a notice for you to help replenish the dealers bank account !
I couldn't find this in the book, so had the dealer tell me the secret.
To turn it off:
1. With ignition switch on, select "odomoter", not "trip", by pushing the odomoter reset button.
2. Turn ignition off (must be to where the key can be removed)
3. Hold down reset button on odometer
4. Turn key to start while keeping odomoeter reset button pushed in.
5. Maint. Req'd light will flash 5 or 6 times and go out.
That's it!
BTW, BMW requires a $50 tool to do this.
