Thanks for the update. I should have responded sooner, since I started this mess! Here's my update:
My dealer called the tech line, and the people there actually thought the problem was the driveshaft, I kid you not... Obviously it was not. I mean, I didn't know where the noise was coming from, but I was pretty sure it was not the driveshaft - especially the rear one, since the noise was in front.
To make a long story short, since I had consistently stated that the noise appeared to be around the steering column, the shop foreman (who is extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful) decided to take matters into his own hands. He took the instrument cluster out and the cover below the steering column, drove the GX, and diagnosed the noise to be a wiring harness rubbing against the steering shaft. Apparently this harness is huge, large enough to cause noise on bumps and to produce the "popping" I kept feeling on the steering wheel when I accelerated suddenly.
Anyway, after the fix, I drove the car over some serious bumps, and it was fixed! I am starting to feel the slight "popping" again, which is worrying me that the fix may be coming undone, but I have heard no squeak yet, so I'll keep my fingers crossed.
At least we now know of 2 potential sources of noise!
Take care.
