40K sounds very low to my. I guess it all depends on your driving conditions and how much wear and tear you have on the brakes.

Just for comparision, I changed my oem brakes on my Camry after 100K. I guess what I am saying is its very easy to get this checked by any tire-shop. They can measure your brake pad usage

Hope this helps

pull off the wheels, very easy to see how much pad is left and when the pads do need to be changed you will hear the constant scratching when you driving.

I never trust the dealer when they tell me my pads are due cause I've gone as much as another 60k , how is that possible when my pads where almost to the metal.

Dealers will take your pads out with 60% of the life left cause it's a non warranty hourly job they make good money on

I would believe the dealers make the same money on waranty vs. non-waranty work. In case of waranty work, they'd bill the manufacturer (Lexus), and in case of non-waranty stuff, they bill the client (you). The billing rate is the same.

However, I'm sure many dealers might fix small things (things that Lexus might not cover as waranty) for customers out of courtesy, without billing them. Any billable item is great for dealers.

They make less on warranty work cause Lexus pays them a set price where as with non warranty items like service items the Dealer sets the profit margin

They do fix little thing for customers but when you consider the price you have to pay anytime you bring your Lexus in, your actually paying for the little things.

I believe the transmission's shifting down when braking must help the brake life a decent amount. Most vehicles engines and transmissions work against brakes particular with V8 engines. When you're traveling 50mph down a hill hitting the brakes and the engine is running at 1500RPMs the engine would like nothing else but to keep you moving. The GX quickly shifts down which I believe helps out the brakes.

If you do suspect the brakes are going because of the squealing sensor, definitely get them changed. If the pads where down, the metal will grind into the rotors and milling can cost a lot of money. Though many dealers make the excuse to mill the rotors everytime the change the brakes anyway.

The pads should last way past 45k, as for when to change/flush the brake fluid, I usually do it when the pads are due.

The brakes on these are as easy as 4Runners, their cake

We've done GX brakes at as low as 19k miles. Last 3 weeks alone we've had 4 GX tanks needing front brakes. 19k, 25k, 28k and 31k miles apiece. No rear brakes yet.

I know thats not what ya'll wanted to hear

Default Just traded in time

When I brought my 2003 for "evaluation" before trade they told me that if I didn't make the trade within a couple of weeks I would need to replace the brakes BEFORE the trade. Fortunately, the founf the color I wanted and I made the deal.

I had 57,000 miles and I stop and start like crazy (live in Manhattan!)

Sounds like you can go any where from 19K-60K depending how you drive. I'm lucky that I'm normally very easy on brakes and drive mostly highway miles. I think I will be one of the 50-60K guys.

this reminds me when i was trading in my RX300 back in 03, i knew my brakes were almost due around 2 months before i got my GX but since i knew i was getting a GX, i just said "forget it" and I've always wondered if my pads were out or almost out. MY RX had 33k before the brake sensors went off. i think this GX is gonna need a lot of brakes when we stop so brake life should last, oh maybe 30k the most and it's gonna cost around $200-$400 here in fresno cal ( i couldn't remember the exact price)
