Default Cabin Filter replacement

How often have you guys had your cabin filter replaced. How dirty was it at the mileage you had it done?

I changed mine at 10,000 miles and it had crud on it and was dirty. The new OEM replacement did not even look like the original factory one, it was much thinner material and did not fit very well in the tray. Double checked with the dealer and they confirmed they sold me the correct one. The factory one looked like it should cost $50, the replacement looked like it was a discount special that should cost maybe $10, and I am being generous. Looks like Lexus cheapened up the filter. I can now smell more exhaust fumes than I did before I changed the filter.

That doesn't sound good. I know that up to the point of air restriction a dirty filter filters better than a new filter. Wonder why they cheapened them? I have 18K miles and mine is 11 months old so I bet it is dirty. I have notice the side window fogging some on rainy humid days and that is one sign of a clogged filter. I understand that there is a good replacement for the OEM filter and it is made by MicronAir TY00145P, but I have not been able to find one yet at the local auto parts store. Thanks for your response.

PS- Based on the lack of response I wonder how many owners know they even need to service this filter or that it even exists?

Lexus sourced the AC / Hepa / Microfilter production to Taiwan about 6 months ago.

The filters used to cost $40-$60 and came with the 'cage'.

now they're all $20-$35.00 and have no plastic cage. All but the RX300/IS filter ends in "YZZ0"

GX uses an 87139-YZZ03 filter now. They used to use an 87139-33010 filter. You may still be able to have this special ordered if it interests you.

How does the quality of the filter element compare?

Thanks for the good information. I think the replacement filter I bought from Lexus was made in the USA, but cannot remember for certain. It was just the filter, not the cage. Is the 87139-33010 filter a better filter, basically is it like the factory one?

Sorry, the 33010 doesnt come with the cage, its just the element. I was wrong about the YZZ03 filters being made in Taiwan too. Assumed that they were made there because the YZZD1/D3 oil filters are infact sourced in Taiwan. woopsie

The cabin filter is located behind the glove compartment door, below the cd changer.

I purchased Filtrete for $15 each. They don't have GX as an option but I choose 4Runner and it fit very well in my 2005 GX.

They offer flat shipping for any number of filters.

I fully agree with Fabio...the new filter is much thinner and the new viscose material used is like normal newspaper, Infact When I bought from sewell, I gave it back to them and replaced buying some other part. And had the existing one cleaned thoroughly, and refitted it back.
The old filter 87139 is non existent anywhere in US, I have tried every place in USA and outside, the dealer just say they have upgraded to a new part number.

i just installed a carquest filter and it works absolutely fine and it was less than 20.00. also being in the industry i have come to realize that aftermarket parts are equal or better quality than factory with the exception of some fluids (trans or differential). my 2 cents
