Same here for both my '02 IS300 and the '04 GX, 2 different dealers with the same scenario in my case.

I am not starting a frame war here. Please explain why you think the dealer BS. Either the dealer did not want to take my quick cash or Lexus want to fix the engines under warranty due to inproper break-in? or people are too chicken to follow the Lexus maintenance schedule?
flame war no, just a good oil debate like every other board now why do I think it's dealer BS, the V8 4Runners share the same powertrain, owners on yotatech.com and T4R.org have changed their oil at 1000 miles and are way up into the 30K plus range without engine problems, the 4.7 is 1 of the best built engines and is suppost to have a running like of 500k, thats right half a million miles, I was also a tech so I've worked on the cars and know what Im doing, before I make a purchase I check every oil and fluid in the vehicles and what all the routine maintenance is, just for usual ownership costs and how easy it is to do things myself if I decide to.

These are not Hondas or Acuras but changing the oil will not hurt the engine, they have no special break in oil, their suppost to have Mobil Drive Clean 5w30 from the factory.

for all your oil debates you should read up on the oil forum http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php

and I've found a thread on Hondas break in oil, seems the guys on the oil forum all agree on dumping the Honda oil cause it's just Honda BS well at least not keeping it in their for 7500, more like 2500-3500, here's a thread I found http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/...c;f=1;t=009964 funny how Saturn does not have a problem changing the oil in a Honda engine for those who don't know the Saturn Vue SUV has Honda V6 engines and trans

I did a little research yesterday on "break in oils". There actually is some validity to a break in oil but it's not as the manufacturers claim. From what I read, the term "break in oil" refers to the use of a dino oil that is non-detergent. Meaning it has no additional additives. Use of this oil promotes GREATER friction than dino with detergents or synthetic. The reason for the use is to allow proper honing of the cylinder walls via the wear pattern of the piston rings.

But the vast majority of the sites I found said to NOT use the "break-in" oil past 1500 miles as an absolute max. At that point the suggestions vary from regular dino to super high end synthetics.

I called up a few dealers in NY, CA and TX. They all told me no need to change oil below 5,000. So this is offical, it is printed in the service manual too. I will stick with the 5,000 interval. No need to chicken. Today's technology is far better than 10-15 years ago.

C'mon now. You know that a 5K mile interval is not an issue nowadays.

While I religously follow a 3K mile schedule, it is common knowledge that with the advancement of today's oils, 5K miles is perfectly acceptable.

I do a 3K mile schedule more out of habit.

I change my 4Runner oil every 10,000 miles using M1, Im not worried about the engine blowing up but if it does Im well prepared, the ES I change with dino at 5k

From reading on this site http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi many of the oils are protecting far more then 1 might realize, their are Honda owners who have gone the full 7500 on the so called break in oil and are now close to 100,000 miles using 10k intervals on regular dino juice, 1 thing to keep in consideration is those are company cars that do 10k in several weeks, their are many things to consider before doing long drain intervals, so I would not encourage the average person to do it without 1st looking at the engine, the oil and the driving habits.

Plus most are brain washed into the 3k routine, gotta change the oil or my engine will blow up, just now the 5000-7500 is becomeing more of the norm.

The GX engine is a 500,000 mile engine, on Tundra Solutions owners who had them as work trucks and change the oil every 20k still went way over 200k with no issues, the engine is easy on the oil, it's just well made and most will trade them in before the engine has an real wear.
