I had one on my last vehicle - it was a deep one, penetrated multiple layers of the laminate in the glass. The repair guy told me it would be 'marginal', but I figured I try it and if it looked bad, I've have the window repleaced. I was surprised to see that even such a large chip was repaired so well. Yes, I could tell it was there, but only because it was directly in my line of sight. When I traded it, the dealer said I had a small 'pit' in the glass (I was thinking to myself that he should have seen the dime size hole that use to be there).
Don't notice that rain made a difference - at least not the rain we get in Arizona.
I think a tallented repair guy can do wonders and they know their limits. If it moves beyond a chip/small hole and starts to spider, then you have to replace the whole glass.

Some guys do a good job repairing it but if it's in the line of sight you will always see the spot, they do tend to fade over time, basically what your seeing is the air trapped under the glass between the surface glass and the plastic laminate, anything bigger then a quarter or a half dollar is easy to repair, bigger then that it's gonna leave a mark.
Depends on your area but hotter places tend to have more windsheilds needed replaced plus luck and road debris, the heat expands them and just turns a chip into a giant crack, I've seen a small chip in the course of a day spread across the entire windsheild.
Most insurance companies realize how easy the windsheilds crack and offer full glass and 3-5 windsheilds a year.
The windsheild market is full of cheap aftermarket stuff that will break more easily, but thats what a lower price gets you, try and go for Toyota or any make that is OEM quality, I know certain glass companies produce OEM quality glass but Im not sure of their name, I've seen plenty of windsheilds in Toyota Boxes in the Lexus Shop.
The way they replace the windsheild on the GX is amazing, just pull the molding off and their you go, glue it place the new 1 in and put molding back, cross fingers it does not leak
I vote for fix 1st then replace it if your not happy
