What kind of gas? Premium or regular? (merged GX gas threads)
#152
The manual for the '07 states Premium (91 and above) is required
However the reason I posted the thread was I just read in an article on Forbes.com that the 07 LX470 can run on regular. This is according to Vincentric, a company that calculates life cycle costs and ownership costs on vehicles, primarily for the OEM's and the press. And since the LX and GX have the same engine, I would think this would hold true for both trucks....

I use 87 if I'm at what I perceive to be a reputable high quality station (Shell, Mobile, Exxon, etc).
But if I'm at a RaceTrac, Citgo, Costco, etc, then I'll splurge and get the 89 or 91, for some reason I'm afraid of their 87 It's probably all the same stuff but it makes me feel better

Because octain helps under heavy loads to allow greater timing, my logic is I will see that when driving around the city. However, on the highway I am rarely accelerating rapidly and the load is low most of the time. Of course, it is also when I am going to consume the most gas in a few hours so replacing a tank happens the same day. That hurts ($$$) so it also helps me justify going for cheaper gas.

why not run 91 or whatever premium is sold in your area all the time? does the $100-200 savings a year really make that much of a difference when u can do you rcar or engine a favor and run PREMIUM all the time.
if the difference is $.20 a gallon thats about $3-4 at each fill up. so if u fill up once a week on average thats about $150-250 a year difference between 87 and 91+ gasoline.
peace of mind is worth the small price each year and there is no way you can tell me that 87 is better then 91+ for any of your cars.
i'm just sayin

The point is that 91 is not better for your engine and 87 doesnt do the engine any harm. The only time I can justify using 91 octane is when I tow or carry a heavy load. Beside Shell gas, which has more cleaning additives in their 93 octane, most other premium gas has the same amount of additives as the regular gas and have no added benefit except for a little bit more torque which you probably would not notice under normal driving conditions.

I understand the mentality of "why do it if its not recommended" I'm just sayin it is suggested to run 89+ in our vehicles so for the difference in price why not do it? it can only help your car and not hrut it to have the 91+ in it. Come on we have a car that cost $50k brand new and people are gonna try to save a few dollars at each fill up by running a lesser grade gas in their car. makes no sense to me but again to each his own.

Inside the gas lid door on my '07 GX it states to use "PREMIUM UNLEADED FUEL ONLY". After switching to 87 octane, I noticed no ill effects(no pinging or power loss), and even realized a slight INcrease in fuel economy as registered on the dash mode meter
#164
The 06 and earlier GX does not have that PREMIUM UNLEADED FUEL ONLY statement on the gas door, thats why I was wondering what changes there was, if any at all, is there between the 06 and earlier and 07.

The previous calculation you had does not apply to everyone. Some drive even more than your suggested amount. Some people think of this truck as some sort of living organism that will be healthier if you give it premium nutrition. This truck does not run any differently (except under towing load) with 87. Some people do not see the point of putting something in that is not utilized efficiently. If you ask any successful financial advisor about spending excessive amounts of money for equivalent services, and he will tell you to seek the path with the greatest return (i.e. if the lower octane fuel doesn't do damage .... what's the point).

Correct the equation may even be less for some people instead of more $ on a yearly basis it doesn;t always have to be higher and for those who it would be higher they shoudl get something alot more effiecient then a suv if they are concerned over saving a few hundred $'s a year but its america and we all love excess. There are numerous ways to calculate wheter its worth it or not as it pertains to other problems that may arise but not using at least what is recommended by the mfg. if u use 87 or lower then buyer beware is all i can say. there is no difference in the pre 06' engine but the 06+'s say to sue premium gas.
do what u want but for those looking to save a few hundred dollars a year or maybe even up to $500 a year by buying cheaper gas is a ridiculous arguement in my eyes but liek i said to each his own. if u are talking about being fiscally responsible then we all would take public transportation so step off that high horse.
funny part is most of these cars are driven by 1 person to work with no need for the 4wd or the space provided in the rear or the 7 person seating so asking us to be responsible is also a lost cause.
