Default Another stupid ? for you guys, 4WD?

Is the GX always in 4WD? I was playing around with the 4WD this evening and my thinking would be that I drive without 4WD by having or leaving the 4WD lever in "N". but when i made sure it was in neutral the car does not move.

So I am guessing the 4WD lever or selector as u may call it has to be in "H" for the car to mvoe forward when in gear?

is this correct?

thx
dan

Either 4 Low or 4 High is the only way the vehicle will move under its own power.

so 4 wheel high it is. the only reason to use low is to pull something real heavy or when stuck. correct?

so am i to understand that the car use AWD or 4WD even on dry surfaces? or does the cars "brain" let it know when to put power to the 2 front wheels?

thx

Dan,

4 wheel drive all the time, there is no 2 wheel option at all... I'm really REALLY hurting at the gas pumps right now... Averaging about 14mpg city...

The truck is always in 4wd. It does have a center or front differential so that that when you are turning the truck won't buck, as the front wheel will always want to turn faster than the rears in turns so the differential will allow "give". HOWEVER, there is a button in the center console that will allow the center differential to be locked, just like an old school 4wd system. This, I guess, improves off-road capabilities. There is no way for you to take the truck out of all wheel (4x4) drive to say, save gas... I think that would defeat the whole purpose, anyways....

I think Lexus calls it "Permanent 4WD".

I thought that the GX is "all-wheel" drive, meaning that each wheel is powered independently of the others.

I use four wheel high when running the dirt roads near the border or in snow. If the terrain turns rocky or I run into a snow bank, then four wheel low for high torque situations. My land crusier's 2F redlines at about 27 MPH in low transfer, high gear on the transmission and overdrive out. So you can over-rev the engine in low transfer without much effort. But, it will not stall in four low and just about climb trees or pull stumps..
