Default Oil change frequency

I have a 06 gx470. I recently took my car for a 5000 service. Now this is the first time getting any kind of fluid service done... but now im reading that i should have taken it in for 500 or 1000 mile service for the break-in... no one told me that

i guess everything will be ok right?!

next service was 10k miles.. and i dont think this one will be free. the 5k was complimentray since i bought the car from them... how much do you think it will run me?? cuz i rather go to a toyota dealer or something... but again.. i do miss the free car wash and loaner car..

Default I would not worry in the least- You changed the oil and thats what matters (more)

5K isn't too bad. I will sometimes do it at 2500 and every 5000-7500 thereafter, assuming I am using a fully synthetic oil like Mobil One. While there are many who advocate doing the oil/filter much more often, I recall reeading several articles in various car mags & even Consumer Reports stating that such is not normally necessary. This will be my first Lexus, so I may shorten the times to 5000 depending on what the manual says. My prior cars were BMWs and now an MB, both of which recommend changing the oil about every 14-15K. I would simply cut that in half just to be safe.
However, (and you knew this was coming) if you do more stop and go driving or towing, etc then more often is likely mandated. If Lexus recommends every 5K then do that, just use Mobil One and a good quality filter.

I had been going every 5K miles and getting an oil change and tire rotation. The cost was $82 inclusive. I have now switched to every 7.5K miles as I drive mostly highway.

lexus use to have 1000 miles break-in service but i think they stop doing that now. 1000 miles service was nothing but a car wash.lol..

Kormaster,

The 1000 mile was for a checkup only on the early 03' 04' models of the GX starting with the 05' models this checkup wasn't necessary anymore. My dealer threw in the 10,000 mile "free" of charge to compensate this change from the manual. The 10,000mi, is normally around $120 ~ $140. Tire rotation, oil change, check filter, check wiper blades and car wash...

There was no fluid change mandated at the 1000 mile "checkup"...

Hope this helps to alleviate some of your concerns!

If you can afford a $50k SUV than stop nick pick on the high cost maintance service! Stop being so dam cheap!
I suggest you sell the Lexus and get something that cost less to maintain.

Spank youseft for me! Thank you!

You're good to go at 5,000 miles. Old school (when I went to lube school) was change every 3,000 miles. Now 5,000 miles is great for CONVENTIONAL oil.

Our 2004 GX was given the 1,000 mile service (whatever that was) and we got the 5,000 mile service complimentary.

I think the Toyota/Lexus recommendation is 7500mile intervals for normal conditions. Check your owners manual.

GXPrado,

2005 and 2004 Lexus manual "recommends" 5000 miles for oil changes... A lot of folks here come from the old school of 3000 miles for oil changes though...

So do we go with Old School or stick with the book?

Porsche's go 20k on the factory fill before the 1st oil change, the 4.7L IForce is easy on oil, really excellent used oil analysis on http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/

Using conventional oil, either 3K or 5K will be fine. I wouldn't recommend going any longer using conventional oil. As far as deciding between the two, do whichever gives you warm fuzzy feelings! If you would rather extend the milage and not have to change so often, switch to synthetic.

Thumbs up Use Mobil 1...

Use Mobil 1.....GX is worth it.....100% synthetic and used as OEM in top of the line cars like Porsche, Mercedes...not sure why Lexus does not use it as factory filled......you can go up to 15K+ per BMW recommendation on synthetics...but I think 7.5K with Mobil 1 for GX 470 is the way to go....

you can pickup Mobil 1 5W30 per Lexus spec from Walmart of Costco! Take it to the dealer and they will put this in instead of their lame $1.50/quart conventional oil...by the way, Mobil 1 makes the engine run smoother and gave me 0.5MPG better mileage....I have used it in my BMW for 40K miles and the engine runs like new...
