Default Egg Smell

Hello everyone .. being a newbie here ..I have aquestion that is still puzzling me with my GX470 2004.. I'm having an issue with egg smell .. they told me it's coming from the gas I use .. moblie .. they suggested I change gas to BP .. which I have .. still egg smell so they put on a new catilac converter .. I still am having egg smell.. they tell me the Lexus Rep says you need to keep using BP gas .. I do burn mid grade ..

Any help out there??
Thanks all

Most of the ULEV vehicles out there have this problem, it has to do with the amount of sulfur content of the gas you use. DEP is suppose to regulate the sulfur content of all gas sold in the US I think sometime soon. Of course, that would mean higher prices as well.

I dont think running a higher octane will make much difference, Lexus recommands you run at least 91 octane.
Your problem might be over soon though, if you look at EPA's time table for Tier 2 sulfer ruduction time table:

http://www.npra.org/issues/fuels/pdf/t2timeline7.pdf

The sulfer content in your gasoline should go down sometime soon.

No difference in gas BP/ Exxon/ Shell etc.......everyone is following the same standard/ specs....by the way the new 4runners had a real tough time with the egg smell - -check out the Edmunds.com consumer discussion.....luckily my 06 does not have any egg smell......so Lexus must have figured out a way..by the way I use 91octane so you may want to try that for a couple of weeks and see....

As much as I hate to say it...you are gonna have to live with it or sell it. I have had two 4Runners with the same problem. A 2004 and a 2006. Getting the service bulletins completed never solved it. The 2006 was even worse for some reason. No matter if I ran 87 or 93 of any brand...it always smelled foul. It was really bad if you opened the power rear window...the smell came zooming into the cabin! I have an LX470 now and it does not produce the odor at all. Same engine. Maybe different cats?

I believe that was the "sulfur" smell that were complained back in the 03s. I remembered reading it, but I don't have a solution for you.

Just to be sure, the smell is not coming from the ac vents???

You kind of get that moldy smell when you run the regular air AFTER using the ac.

Default Sliding rear Window

4Runner owners notice the smell more readily because of the rear sliding window
I had the TSB done last year and it helped, but under strong acceleration the smell is still noticeable. I just blame it on one of the kids.
