2006 model, well after 58,000 miles driven, finally felt a slight bump occasionlly after a complete stop ( 1 in every 25 to 30 stops). First thing pop in mind, I was going to relube the propeller shaft myself following Man77 DIY guide, but went to TOYOTA dealer instead and they charged me for $40.00. Here's the breakdown what they did, Lube and retorque propeller driveshaft bolts, lube all drive axel front and rear in 6 places (don't know what this mean), no more bump for now, don't know how long will it last, probably ask for TSB repair next time around.

I just recently replaced the shaft after the First was during the warranty itself. And felt it was high time due. Here is a DIY who want to do it. Hope it helps.

I bought an 04' GX 4 months ago for my wife and noticed "the clunk" after about 3 days. Took it to the dealer and they knew exactly what the problem was. Replaced the driveshaft and it rides good as new now.

I have after market warranty from on my 04 gx 470. They would not cover the clunk issue on warranty since the drive shaft is not lubricated before. I know clunk would appear no matter how well it is lubricated. It is design of the shaft. Service rep. at the dealer showed TSB to warranty company. Well, Fedality warranty is making excuse on the lubrication issue only and not paying.

Any advises?
Does drive shaft needs to be lubricated often?

This is a recall and therefore they have to fix the problem. This has been an ongoing problem with the 1st gen GX470. Call Lexus and report the problem.

The clunking sound you gentlemen refer to is the sound the car makes after you make a complete stop right? It sounds like you get rearended seconds after.

Just checking in to let everyone know I just had my "clunk" fixed even though I didn't have the "clunk". Lexus of Las Vegas is a top notch place. 2005 GX470 with 19,750 miles. The TSB was expiring on Feb 17th for me. Thanks to this forum I brought it to their attention. Got a loaner IS250, truck got washed, and I got some new parts all done in a day!

Big thanks to the dealer and big thanks to this forum!

that's really interesting. Looks like there's a right & a wrong way to replace the rear control arms. They're pretty specific about how to identify the L&R control arms based on the holds in the bushings.

Having played around w/bushing alignment in various cars in my younger years and seeing the consequences, I'm thinking swapping the L&R control arms could seriously screw w/our rear ride quality -- could explain why some of us have had poor ride after the clunk fix, and some of us are fine.

I'm going to have to get under mine over the weekend to see if the dealer got it right...

I got a 04 GX 470 recently. I love the ride of it! Ocassionly I notice the "clunk" problem, perhaps 1 out of 20 stops. Other than annoying, is it really a harm to the vehcile or the driveshaft? Would the situation get worse over the time? Does it have to be fixed?
Thanks in advance for the advice.

It is just back of your head, that this happens and you feel the jerk, or a thump, If you are comfortable with this , then you could continue to grease at certain intervals. But it would be a stage where the thump shaft to replace, preferable during the warranty, than shell from your pocket.
