Default Bike Racks and Gas Milage

Has anyone noticed a decrease in gas milage when leaving a rack on your GX full time? I have a Sportworks (now Thule) T2 rack on my GX. I leave it on full time as im riding 3 times a week or more. As well, the thing weighs a good 40 pounds or so...it would be a royal pain to take off and on.

I have noticed that in the rare instance that I do take it off (snow boarding trips) that my gas milage is better. Anyone else experience this?

I figure that the extra weight and possible drag is probably the cause but I figured I would throw it out there to see if anyone has the same issues.

I would assume that your theory would be correct on drag and weight. However, I would assume that it would be very minimal.

nice rack!
we're like twins

i too leave the rack on, haven't noticed any extra consumption of fuel, but the handling has been slightly affected.

Thats the new Thule version huh? I like it in the silver better than all black but who really cares. Best bike rack ever.

I swear im going crazy.....but it just seems like my gas milage has dropped quite a bit...more than a 1 mpg. I average (at an average of 70-75 mph hwy) about 15.6 mpg. That is, ofcourse, with my 42 pound race bike on the back as well. And yeah, handling is different for sure. I know the bike and rack probably act like a freakin sail back there but dang..15.6?!?. Oh well, it is a V8 after all...cant expect much.

Do you ride? Where? XC, DH ?
