I had the philips kit from xenondepot.com and mine were mounted vertically as well - no problems for 2 years.

My failed ballast was on the drivers side too. I installed per Tony's instructions too, but not sure if there is a connection.

Well, I bought and installed the ballast from Cliffud. Had to change the bulb connectors, but it worked out well. I re-instlled the ballast in the Phillips plastic case and mounted it plugs down between the battery and fender wall. A little more out of the way.

I decided to look inside the bad ballast. Found corrosion in the lower half. Not sure how or why it's there. Looks a little like the inside of a flashlight when the batteries leak.

That's good to hear that everything is ok and it works now.

Bum deal about the philips ballast, it's nice that the philips kits come with the plastic housing to shield it from the elements however once water gets into them, I'd think the water would stay in there and sit for a longer period of time instead of just drying out from the wind and heat in the engine bay.

Dave, lemme know if you need anything else. Thanks.

Kbach,
I swapped mine (left/right) and mounted the driver side as you did but in lateral position, and clean the dammaged connectors. So far no outage yet. I hope it will stay that way.
