I recently bought an '05 gx470 and need to get the oil changed. The dealer used Castrol brand, which I have used in other cars, but what weight? My climate is more dry than humid and flat terrain - Texas Panhandle region.

Any name brand synthetic will do, 5W30 is the oil viscosity recommended by Toyota.

Elf and Motul are two excellent and underrated oils. They are available down here, but you need to ask in the right places, usually Elf at Renault dealers and Motul goes through independent distributors. I have had people swear that the Elf Excellium is the best oil they ever used. The Motul is well liked by some diehard Nissan racers at my track. There is at least one guy I know with a Landcruiser (since we don't have Lexus until later this year) who has been using Liqui Moly 5W40 and loves that stuff.

Lexmex, you seem to be a true connoisseur of oils.
I have been very happy with these oils in my so called daily driven vehicles; however in my track car I use and trust Redline oil.

With Redline, I am currently trying out a 10W40, but I haven't been to enthusiastic about it. Perhaps I should have gone with a 5W30, but I have had good experience using their other products like WaterWetter and their Fuel System Cleaner. My favorite oil is still the German Castrol 0W30, which I can get here at BMW dealers.
Pennzoil Platinum is sold down here but marketed just as Pennzoil Synthetic, and I am thinking about giving that one a try next.
With Mobil 1, I used to like them a lot until they changed their formulation, the only one I liked in the end was their 0W40. I found myself having to use additives, especially Liqui Moly MOS2.
For some odd reason, most of the oils sold in Mexico are W40 or higher.

I use Mobil 1 delvac 5w40 commercial grade synthetic in my LX, Mobil 1 0w40 in my hondas, & Shell Rotella T synthetic 5w40 in my 4runner (shell rotella T syn isn't really a true synthetic since it uses group III basestocks).
If you have to use a mineral based oil, Castrol is certainly better than consumer oils like Quaker State [lots of varnish/residues] or Penzoil. Shell Rotella 15w40, Chevron delo 15w40 and Mobil delvac 15w40 are also excellent [commercial grade] oils (sold in 1 gal jugs at WalMart).
