Default GX470 towing??

I'm contemplating between a Tundra or a GX470 as a daily driver. On occasion, I'll be towing a open car hauler with a weight of 5000-5500lb with the car on. I know the GX is capable of towing 6500lb with the towing package, but I'm interested to know how well it handles towing in the real world. Power, Handling at speed, mountain, wind, etc?

If you have experience towing with the GX please enlighten me.

Default towing

I have towed a 5000lb. boat with my 06 GX with no problems. No sway or excessive downshifting. The engine struggles a little on steep hills, but that his to be expected. The truck self levels when the trailer is placed on the ball.

I tow a trailer with dirt bikes with no problems but that's a farily light load. Honestly in your case you might be better off with the tundra as it has more horsepower.

I agree with the assessment of the GX's towing capability - very capable in the under-7k lbs category, but it struggles a little bit when hills are involved and loses a lot of gas mileage when towing. My brother-in-law has a 2008 Tundra, and that thing is a beast. It tows 10k lbs with zero effort, and it gets a lot better gas mileage towing than my GX. The Tundra engine is just a heavier duty breed than the GX, so this is to be expected. I would choose the Tundra if I was in the market for a pickup truck, but the SUV serves our family better right now. Probably boils down to personal preference if you will only be towing occasionally.

Default Airstream no problem

I have towed my Dad's 25' Airstream. It weighs in at 5200 Dry weight, after we load it up, it must have been closer to 5800 LBs +. Tows really well, engine has to work on the steeper hills. Gas mileage does suffer, I averaged 13 MPG from Vancouver BC to the Okanagan which is up and down some pretty good hills. Normally do just under 20 MPG on the same trip with no trailer.
I agree with the other guys, if you are just going to occasionaly use the GX for towing and like the comfort of a nice SUV then the GX is the way to go. No doubt the Tundra or even the new LX570 would be more capable then the GX. Still when I bought mine, part of the criteria was the ability to pull the Airstream without stressing the 4.7 Liter 263 horse motor. I have a 2006 with the heavier duty tow package.

Cheers

I just posted on the towing of the GX.
What is nice is that the GX suspension will level out the load. My Tundra did not do that and I feel better in the GX due to it's all wheel drive. Both are capable.

Thanks for the responses guys.

On paper the short wheelbase should affect sway and handling at speeds. How is your experience with handling, especially with wind and passing semi trucks?
