You can certify your car, if you want.

3 years / 100K miles.

And if you buy a Lexus warranty, you get a nice brochure that explictly states what is covered and what isn't.

I am amazed when people don't buy extended warranties. Why would you not spend $1500 or so on your several thousand dollar purchase to protect it?
His wasn't a Lexus or Lexus backed extended warranty - it was a third party. As such, I specifically addressing 3rd party extended warranties which for the most part are pure profit centers and provide funds to cover everyone but the policy holder when needed.

I missed that, sorry.

Yes, absolutely correct.

Lexus warranty = good, and maybe worth it if you will drive the car a while.

Any other warranty = pass. Absolutely not worth it.

Kalvano, doesnt the car have to be in good mechanical condition before the insurance company takes on your warranty. If they can prove that you had the ecu problem before you bought the warranty, they can void your claim.

Kalvano, you can certify the car on your own? Where do you go for this?To a Lexus dealer? How much does it cost? I am curious because the factory warranty on our other car is up this winter.I have to star looking into an extended warranty or possibly certify as you are saying...whichever is better.

Here is my Story...
Talked to couple of different Extended Warranty Company/Broker.
Now Bumper to Bumper Warranty which is 48months/100000(Odometer) excluding wear and tear will cost around $2500 with $100 deductible per Visit to Dealer/Mechanic. They told me I shouldn't worry about Warranty Company not paying for the repair as long as I do regular maintainance and such, they will cover every part of the car except wear and tear parts(brake pads, tires, windshield wiper blades and such). And they said they don't have no problem me taking it to Lexus dealer for repair, they will directly pay them -$100 deductible. And there is no limit on visits, repair cost as long as repair cost doesn't cost more than vehicle value. Now I was at local Lexus dealer Monday(1st) and found out I needed SKID CONTROL ECU which cost little over $2000. And these extended warranty company said I have to wait 30days/1000miles before I file any claims but USED CAR DEALER where I bought my GX from said they can put me on a Warranty program which would've effected the date I bought it which was Nov.18, I think I am going with my USED CAR DEALER WARRANTY, I've done researches and people are saying these EXTENDED WARRRANTY is BS but I have no choice, they said they will fix it. First repair on this GX is costing me $2000 on single repair alone and extended warranty for next 4yrs or 40000miles is $2500, might as well right? What would you guys do if it was you.... What are your thoughts??

thanks,
Tae

Look, I understand your dilemma and frustration. A number of us have addressed the extended warranty issue from various points of view for you quite well. You can and should do what you feel is in your best interest at this point.

That being said, if it were me...... the absolute last place I would consider buying it from was the same dealer who wouldn't back me up on a purchase which has a major problem less than 2 weeks after purchase.

The problem reared it's ugly head w/in how many days & miles???

Best of luck w/ your decision. I truly hope this gets resolved for you in short order as these trucks really are great

I am in total agreement . I would stay with a Lexus warranty for sure. Much luck to you.

A Lexus dealer can certify a 2002 or newer, with less than 70K miles.

Cost will be $995 for the certification fee, which goes to Lexus, not the dealership, plus the cost of bringing everything to spec for certification.

I know we spend an average of $2K on a certified car.

Good info Kalvano, thanks. We have a 2006 GS300 in which the factory warranty will expire this February. It has 30 k on it. Would it be better for me to certify it or should I get a Lexus extended warranty?

Keep in mind, when you certify it, there is an immediate $995 that has to go to Lexus, plus any cost of bringing it to spec for certification.

It will end up being cheaper for most people to pay the $2K or so for a Lexus warranty instead of certifying. I've seen some certification bills on some of our pre-owned cars that were $3500 or $4K.
