Default Brazil: Toyo Land Cruiser Prado and Toyo SW4

I'm traveling in Brazil this week and saw my first Prado aka GX. It was valet parked right up front of a nice restaurant, like it were a Ferrari or Lambo! I don't recall which wheels it had, but the link below shows something that looks like the 4Runner Ltd wheels, but might be 17s per the web specs. I wonder how its 3L turbodiesel compares to our V8. Probably down in hp, but real close in mpg and torque - seriously. Anyone?

I also saw a number of Toyota SW4's, which look to be a cross to between a mini-GX, 4Runner and RX. It's not a RAV4 best I can tell. They look good. Anyone know what the US equivalent is?!

If you hit the links, they should take you to Toyota Brazil. Check out the prices! We're talking ~$68K USD for the SW4 and ~$73K USD for the Land Cruiser Prado. The RAV4 is ~$48K USD! Wow.

Thanks for the links. I'm guessing Toyota can get away with charging that much for the TLC Prado in Brazil because in Brazil the TLC Prado IS the "mac daddy Landcruiser" (as one member here recently put it ).

The Land Cruiser Prado in Brazil come with turbo diesel. That is why there is a high cost.

It is also called "Toyota Fortuner". It is build on Hilux (Tacoma) platform, so it is a relative of 4runner/GX.

That SW4 is also known as a toyota fortuner elsewhere around the world. My uncle has a fully loaded one with a diesel in the Philippines, to be honest, i couldn't really tell you how it handled on the road because well, all of the roads there are garbage, but off-road? its quite fun haha

"Toyota's new 1KD-FTV 3.0 produces 161-168 hp and 280 lb-ft, but an updated version (needed to meet US emissions) with more hp is always possible." and "Toyota and GM/Isuzu engines run about 8.5 L/100 km (27.8 mpg)..."

[I can't vouch for the accuracy of these statements.]

Looks like Toyota's 4.2L diesel puts out 198 hp by comparison. The might put out 33% more torque to 380 ft lbs and ~26mpg. If correct, this would be ~ 50 ft lbs more than our 4.7L with superior mpg.

With premium gas prices dropping like a stone, my interest in the lower hp deisels wanes considerably, but the allure of more tq outweighs it. However, like many of you, I suspect that we'll get creamed again in summer with higher petrol prices and we'll be dreaming of diesels!

Don't forget that diesels have almost flat torque curve, and gas engines do not (even close).
