Default R.I.P. Transmission 2004-2009

I bought an '04 GX in November 2008 with 52k miles. This morning on the way to work my truck was running fine until I went out at lunch to get some food. On the way out of the parking lot as I came to a stop I felt the "clunk" as I stopped. When I started moving again, the transmission started slipping pretty badly and slipped while changing each gear until I was in over drive. After a couple of minutes my CEL, VSC TRAC, and VSC OFF lights all came on. I called Lexus of Silver Springs (Baltimore, MD) to see if I could bring it in. When they test drove it they noticed the clunk but not the slipping so they did the TSIB (drive axle, propeller shaft, etc), washed it and gave it back. On my way out of the lot it started slipping again so I turned around and drove with a mechanic. As soon as he felt it slip he told me to turn around and said he would order me a new transmission.

I'm now rocking my '08 RX350 loaner while waiting for the weekend to get my baby back. Needless to say I'm very happy that it is within the 6 year/70k powertrain and I can get a new transmission for free. I will give an update when I get my truck back but I figured I would share the bittersweet news with everyone.

On a side note...I know this isn't an RX forum, and I'm not ragging on it but I am rather unimpressed. I suppose I am just very spoiled by my GX. The comfort of the ride was less than I expected as well as the interior design. However, I love the HIDs and am strongly contemplating throwing on some 4000k or 4300k when I get it back.

Lexus usually just replace the tranny with a re-built one, check with your dealer to make sure.

1. 6 years/70k miles did in fact cover the drive axle and propeller shaft, and thanks

2. My girlfriend has an '03 Toyota Highlander, and thats all that the RX was in my opinion....except newer and even more like a camry. It had the same wood grain from the camry as well as the center dash...eerily similar for being the top of the line. Needless to say I'm glad I have my GX.

3. Thanks for the heads up, I will ask what it is. If it is rebuilt, would it come with any kind of additional warranty for the transmission itself?

You can certainly ask them about the additional warranty. Its not something they would automatically offer, but there have been cases where a coustomer have recieve additional warranty time on the re-built transmission.
