Default Updated NAV software for GX 470

I have a 04 GX470 and was shopping around for updated NAV. I was told by the dealer that it will cost $265 for the December 2008 update (Next update is due out December 2009). I asked for the version and received the run-around. I was looking on Ebay and don’t want to purchase the wrong update. Can anyone tell me what will be located on top of the DVD? I believe that the 04 GX has 3rd generation, but can’t seem to find what year update it is clearly marked.

If you go to the menu screen it should have DVD version displayed somewhere. I can't remember exactly the steps but I think you go to menu then select DVD and in there it'll tell you what disc version you have.

I've been thinking about updating my 2004 GX - here's what I've researched

- There are two considerations
- What Lexus calls the 'Generation', which changes over time with newer models and model years. The basic capability of each Generation is not able to be updated. The 2003 & 2004 GX have 'Generation 2/3' - and that's all we will ever be
- What Lexus calls the 'Data' that the Nav system uses. This is a DVD and is found (in our model) under the passenger seat. If you move the seat all the way forward and look from the back - there's a cover with a couple of claw fasteners - once released & cover removed, you can see the controls for the DVD. Turn the key to Acc or On, press and slide the button on the DVD unit under the seat (you'll see it once you get the cover off and take a look). The DVD will open and offer the disk - take it out and replace it with the new one - press and slide the button again, and the system will reboot. The Nav system will operate like always - it's still a Gen 2/3 - but the data (maps, POIs, etc) will be more recent.

The Gen 2/3 Data DVD is Version 09. I found it available at different places on line, for various prices. I've also found on ebay where people are selling their 'old' DVD after buying the latest version - so I could buy Version 08 or 07 and save a few bucks. The data updates year to year are 'evolutionary not revolutionary' - so you might or might not see much difference, depending on the area you are mostly driving in.

I'm guessing there's a significant data update between 2004 & 2009 but I've not found anywhere that lists the actual differences, so who knows..... I live in the SLC area, which did a major update to the freeway system over the last 8 years, and my 'old' Version 03 is pretty useless since some of the exit numbers and layouts are very different

To Find out your current DVD Data version
- power up the Nav unit, press the 'I Agree'
- Press the Menu button below the screen (3rd button from left)
- On the display screen, touch the 'DVD' icon in the top right corner - it will bring up a screen with the DVD info. My 2004 GX with the original DVD is Version 03

Other model years may be different - this is just what I've found for my 04 model. Hope this helps.
