Hi I just found out, after ~6 months, that the lexus dealer never put the engine oil filler cap back on after they did the service on my 2008 GX470. How bad will this damage the engine?

You could have some dust particles flying in, unless severe driven thru severe sandstorms the debris would have been higher.

You are probably OK but have the dealer change your oil and filter right away to clean her out.

Always check there work when you pick her up.

How this could have gone unnoticed for 6 months? Doesn't anyone ever open the hood of this vehicle to check fluid levels and the general state of things?

That no one did a basic underhood check for 6 months is far more weird than the oil filler cap being left off. A thorough underhood check should be done at least once a month -- I do it at least weekly on our vehicles.
