Default 12V/120W Plug Is Shorting Out- Any Ideas?

I use the 12V/120W plug on my '06 GX to charge my cell phone. The plug stopped working a few weeks ago. I checked the fuse and it was blown, so it seemed like an easy fix. But 2 times a new fuse blew immediately when I inserted them and turned on the truck. So I brought the truck to Lexus. They told me they fixed a short (no charge) and I picked up the truck. I test the plug at the dealership and it works fine but it blows again on my drive home. I needed to get to an appointment so I couldn't take it straight back to the dealer. Anybody else ever have this problem?

try a different cell phone charger, could be an intermittent short in the charger.

Yes, I fully agree with Dbacf, it is the charger of your cell phone ( normally the chinese stuff are prone to such problems)

That's wierd that it's blowing the fuse and not just popping the circuit breaker. The button on the dash is also a breaker, which pops out when there is too much load. I wonder if your switch might be faulty?

IF the fuse is blowing out again after replacement, there is a serious problem, looks to me an electrical overload in the circuit or device it protects. Replacing the fuse may only fix the problem temporarily -- and if the new fuse blows immediately, that will require further diagnosis. You can do troubleshooting with a jumper wire with a fuse and do a test, bypassing the points and see if there is continuity, if there is then the target is the relay. I guess if you are going to the dealer, ask him to hook up the DLC tool and that will able to diagnose the problem, It will tell if the relay is blown. Do not ask him to do a visual, ensure he uses the DLC tool, you have option to check for blown relays.

Thanks guys. I'm going to do a combination of your 4 posts. I'm bringing it in on Wednesday morning for Lexus to check it out. At the same time, the thought re the charger itself causing the short makes alot of sense. I've bought a new charger (just $9 on EBay) and I'll use that going forward. Thanks again.

I totally misread the question

I thought is was the inverter in the back (which had me wondering why you would not just use a 12v charger).

Sorry, please disregard my last post.

Thanks for the help guys. You saved me a trip to the dealership. Before bringing it in again I replaced the fuse for the third time and tried it with a new cell phone charger. Problem solved. It must have been a short within the charger that was blowing out the circuit breaker.
