I do agree that appearance or packaging is subjective (recall all the negative remarks about GX460 before it came out). The handles on the console do seem to be dysfunctional, also the nav controls can be confusing. The 'add-on' seat controls are actually part of the optional articulated seats, they control the massage and shifting functions - generally available on the GL550. Overall the finish and feel of the interior is on par or better than GX. Being objective, I can say that you really can not compare the two vehicles. They are a different 'breed". GX has a much longer heritage line as it evolved from the 4runner line, GL was designed from scratch (some claim that it evolved from ML - not so). I believe, when choosing a car you should weigh all the factors, and you will have to compromise on some things. No cars are perfect :-)

If you're going to be using the vehicle to cruise down the highway and never go off road, I'd consider the GL. If you want versatility I'd go with the the GX470. I think the GX460's are hideous and therefore I'd never even consider going with anything other than the 1st gen GX.

interesting subject to talk about, my wife & I were considering Benz also, used ML or RL few months ago. But decided to jump to get a used GX since we're not really sure how reliable benz is, especially a used one with 60K-70K~ miles.
