Exclamation Grinding sound when car is in drive and trying to accelerate.

Hi,
I ger this grinding sound when I put the truck is drive or reverse and the truck goes nowhere. I ran into this problem over the weekend when I had a valet attendant park the truck. I tried everything I can to get it in gear including yanking the H/L shifter as hard as I can but ended up having to flatbed the truck to the dealer. They are now looking into the problem. I am afraid they might come back and tell me I need a new transfer case or transmission and it's going to cost me over 5k. I have a 2004 with 40K miles and it's over 8 months out of warranty. Do you know what might have caused such a problem?

Thanks.

my guess is the valet did some serious off-roading for you j/k

in all seriousness, I'll be they moved the H/L xfer case while the truck was in gear and/or moving. Hopefully it's just as simple as putting it into N and shifting it back to L, then to H letting it cycle thru. Let us know what they tell you and good luck!

I just got a call from the dealer, they said that the transfer case needs to be replaced and it's going to cost my 4300 for the parts plus labor. I don't understand how something like this can break all of a sudden! Could shifting the H/L lever while the truck is running cause such damage?

At this point I am running out of options. I know these truck's were having problems with a leaking transfer case. Mine never had the leak but could the whole transfer case be defective?

That is a horrible story. Don't watch valet videos on youtube or you'll be heading back there with a baseball bat. Sorry for your troubles.

Take your car to any Independent Lexus shop. Can you rebuild it? Also check car-part.com may be you can find used one. Also tell dealer that Transfer case was deffective may be they can help you with the cost.
