Default Grind when putting in 4wd mode

So this is my first 4wd vehicle.
I read that to put vehicle in 4wd when the car is running, put the car in neutral and shift the 4wd stick to H or L depending on the driving condition. When I do that, it grinds a little before slipping into the mode. Is this normal? Am I shifting it into 4wd incorrectly?

Also, when doing normal road driving on pavement (no rain or snow), should the car be kept in H or N on the 4wd stick?

WHOA....THAT IS NOT THE. 4wd!!!!!! That is the transfer case. Read manual ASAP!!!! That is mostly for off road use, a lower gear ratio. The switch for the full time 4WD is on the console. Transfer case gets changed with the trick stopped, in neutral. H IS THE NORMAL EVERYDAY POSITION. L is for crawling over rocks or very steep climbs or descents.

Ok. I was switching the transfer case when in neutral and it makes a very slight grind before sliding into H. Not a screaming grind.

Mine makes a slight grind. I guess it to be the gears catching?

There's something in your question that makes me think you might not realize the GX is "full time 4wd", or "AWD" depending on your preference. It has a torsen center diff that divvies up torque f&r as needed. In other words, you don't need to do anything to be "in 4wd". Things like locking the diff, and going into Low, are for extreme and rare cases only.

You are correct. I did not know it was full time AWD. This is actually the wife's car.
My concern was when switching between L N and H, there was a slight grid sound and the stick would vibrate until the gears caught. The grind is very slight (not the screaming gear grinding) and it seemed like it should 'sync' a little better than that.

I remember playing around with it once when I first got the car. My car too "grinded" a little when I was shifting from H-N-L. So definitely a little harsher shift than the transmission. I also hope that the "grinding" sound is normal too. I haven't tried it again since. Hope this helps.
